Antonioli snubs Juve move Monday 5 June, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco Antonioli is understood to be ready to turn down a move to scandal hit Juventus this summer.

It was believed that the veteran would be joining the Turin giants on a free transfer once his Sampdoria contract had expired.

However, with the very real threat of Serie B football next season, the 37-year-old is now set to pen a new deal in Genoa.

Antonioli was wanted in Turin as the second choice 'keeper behind Gigi Buffon seeing as Christian Abbiati will return to Milan in the summer.

Terms between the two parties were already agreed but the former Roma man seemingly wants his Serie A future assured.

It’s unclear at this stage though whether Antonioli will still be handed the first choice gloves at the Stadio Ferraris.

Sampdoria may opt to promote Luca Castelazzi, the club’s No 2, to the role next term after spending a season acclimatising to his new surroundings.

Juventus may now be forced to bring back custodian Antonio Mirante to the club after he spent last term on loan at Siena.

Mirante is an Under-21 Italian international.

we still have Bonnefoi and Mirante as backup, they should get their chance...so its not soo bad antonioli coming. He is sitting on the bench whether he comes here or not, sampa r putting castellazi infront of him anyway

Him not coming to juve is proberly one of the best news ive heard for a while, seriously I think we would be better off without another old hog.

It wouldn't be a problem looking for an equivalent of Antonioli on the market, but for once I'd like to see us go for someone young and talented, just as we did before with the likes of Isaksson and Carini. In the event of Buffon leaving, which is a very real possibility, we wouldn't want to be left with an Antonioli (or god forbid, a Chimenti).

There's no point of having a talented young houalkeeper as a second choice GK on the bench. He wouldn't get the chance to develop his skills, therefore it'd be better if we had a relatively seasoned veteran as a second choice who we could trust (not like Chimenti). Therefore I'm a little saddened by the news because Antonioli was a good enough GK.

I'll say it again, having Mirante on the bench would be a major error.
