Juve ‘agree’ Antonioli deal

Wednesday 5 April, 2006

Sampdoria ‘keeper Francesco Antonioli is being tipped to join Italian champions Juventus at the end of the season.

Reports in Italy on Wednesday suggest that the Bianconeri have targeted the veteran, with some whispers claiming that a deal has already been done.

The 36-year-old will apparently move to the Stadio Delle Alpi on a free transfer for the 2006-07 campaign.

Antonioli, who won a Scudetto at Roma under the guidance of present Juve boss Fabio Capello, will be netted to become Gigi Buffon’s new understudy.

Juventus need to bring in cover for the Italian international given that Christian Abbiati will return to Milan at the end of the season.

Abbiati joined Juve on loan from the Rossoneri last summer following the shoulder injury sustained by Buffon.

His arrival subsequently shut the door on former No 2 Antonio Chimenti who later joined Cagliari in the January transfer window.

Antonioli, a former Italy international who was part of the Euro 2000 expedition, has vast experience at the top level.

He’s played in goal for the likes of Milan and Bologna in his career before he joined Doria in the summer of 2003.

Antonioli’s No 1 shirt at Marassi will now probably be handed down to former Italian Under-21 ‘keeper Luca Castellazzi, who currently sits on the bench in Genoa.

I would have preffered Landreau, Storari or Sicignano but Antonioli can do the job.(as backup)

Mirante would rot on the bench. Let's give him more experience with a team like Palermo...

yes, it makes no sense to have him sitting on the bench and waste his talent.

Good point mate. Abbiati won't mind sitting on the bench, and will offer experience to the squad. Plus with Mirante possibly going to Palermo on loan, could as a paperweight for Zaccardo, Barzagli, Barone?:D

It woulnt be fair to Mirante to come and sit in the bench for Juve, cause lets face it, with Buffon he will not play in this team... thats why its better for Mirante that he stays in another team wining more experience

Though for that argument, we should have signed Antonioli's mom.

(Though Zlatan's mom might have been another option ... she seems to be posting a lot here lately. ;))

Why do we need someone 36 years old?
Simply for experience, and someone who wont mind sitting on the bench. Thats why we have players like zalayeta, birindelli, giannichedda, etc. They might only be average players, but Juve need these :D squad players
