Vergne hospitalised amid extreme F1 diets

Jean-Eric Vergne has admitted he was hospitalised recently amid an extreme weight-loss regime for the 2014 season.

Bigger than teammate and Toro Rosso newcomer Daniil Kvyat, the slight Russian teen, Frenchman Vergne admitted he committed to losing several kilograms over the winter to prepare for F1′s much heavier new cars.

“The weight difference between myself and my teammate was making me lose four tenths (per lap),” Vergne, who was given a rare third consecutive season with the Red Bull junior team this year, told French media.

“I did a diet this winter but you get to certain limits that the body can no longer take.

“Actually, I was in hospital between the grands prix in Australia and Malaysia because of a lack of water and a little bit of lack of everything. I was very weak,” the 23-year-old revealed.

Vergne said that while the minimum car-plus weight limit was raised by the FIA for the new turbo V6 rules, the 692kg figure is still far too low.

“Frankly, this (situation) is stupid,” he insisted.

“Formula one cars are very difficult to drive and we need all of our skills. Being forced to lose weight is not good.”

Vergne said the matter has been discussed by the drivers several times already in 2014, “but we have not reached a solution.

“Some lighter drivers want to keep their edge,” he said.
Fucked up, they need to do something about it asap. Some of the drivers look ill, Button is a rake now.

What a race, best and most exciting in a very very long time. Too bad Ferrari is pathetic. Poor Fernando & Kimi having to drive such embarrassing donkeys... last year they were 3rd/4th fastest car now 5th/6th.

Maldonado is a dickhead and should be banned.

they got in CEO of Ferrari North America with no racing experience...

just hoping it's either temp or maybe he will be in a new role with someone else in a more technical role or at least to replace Pat Fry (Brawn :xfinger:)

Yeah, Domenicali needed to go (despite him being a likeable character IMO, there was zero progress being made) but why this guy? Unless there's something we don't know, I don't feel it will be much of an improvement.

he probably has good man management unlike domenicali but the techincal side is still lacking probably. I don't think Fry and Tombazis should stay either though ...

Alonso tops FP1 in China 1'39.738
    Rosberg 2 - 1'40.181
No running for Kimi in FP1. Good for Alonso, Mercedes obviously sandbagging but hope the car is better to compete with other Merc engine cars & Red Bull.

    FP2 in session now.

    Alonso :delpiero:

Nice improvement and tactics by Ferrari. I hope we can at least get a couple of wins this season.

Kimi... disappointing. I really expected better.

Ricciardo proving that Vettel might not be as good as people think.

Good to see Alonso improving, but once again boring with Mercedes being so much faster.

I'm surprised the gap between Alonso and Raikkonen is so big, I expected it to be a close competition for who would turn out the better driver. Still early though.

Kimi's best lap was about 3 tenths slower than Alonso, but China is one of the worst tracks for him since he struggles to get heat into the very hard Pirelli tires. This year's ones are quite a bit harder than last year's. He might end up besting Alonso maybe 2-4 times at most by the end of the season but Alonso is one of the best drivers ever... Kimi is not quite.

Big updates for F14T in Spain apparently...

-New nose/FW ('extreme'?) a bit like the new Mercedes one
    -New floor
    -New RW
-New sidepods, they will be tighter because Ferrari will have new smaller radiator, all of this to have a better top speed
-The new engine cover will be more tight around the gearbox
-New software update, they hope to gain between 10 or 15 HP
-Further developments in fuel from Shell who have reduced the horsepower deficit to Mercedes to around 20bhp

    Hopefully they work well :xfinger:
