What's new for 2018?

After the rules revolution of 2017 – one that saw F1 cars become wider and faster – this season’s changes are relatively few in number. That doesn’t mean, of course, that they aren’t important – and some will be very obvious indeed…
SUMMARY

Technical regulations:
- T-wings and shark-fin style engine covers outlawed
- halo cockpit protection device mandatory
- suspension systems that could alter the car’s aero performance over a lap not allowed

Sporting regulations:
- drivers allowed three rather than four power units per season
- simplified grid penalties for power unit changes
- wider range of dry tyre compounds

Ham seemed to struggle when he had to follow leading car. Merc not able to cope under slipstream?

Too early to make conclusions. Vettel benefited from the pitstop during Haas retirements. He was able to drive faster in the pits. Same goes with rest. Ricciardo could have made podium without his grid pen. Max spun.

Would Haas have finished ahead of mclaren and renault without their issues?

It does look though that Merc customer teams dont have engine advantage and Renault has built better engine with all of the teams running well with it. Mclaren and Renault finishing ahead of Force India (team who has finished 4th in constructors last 2 years). And they had had a 14 race in a row point finish since Monaco last year.

Meanwhile Honda still same old story under Toro Rosso.

Mercedes did not like the dirty air at all, problem is that they probably won't be behind anyone all that often
The next race will reveal a lot more, we have to start qualifying first otherwise we are always behind the 8 ball

Actually, while Mercedes looked the quicker car in Melbourne its a complete flip on last year in a way. If you look at the speed traps, the Ferrari engined cars were quicker than the Mercedes powered ones. It looks like Ferrari made a lot of progress on the engine but Mercedes made more progress on the chassis & aero. Bahrain is a power hungry circuit so it will be interesting to see whether the Ferrari is a closer match to Mercedes in qualifying and perhaps Ferrari could be quicker on race pace.

Verstappen ruins Vettel race. Gets 10 sec pen and still finish ahead of him. How is that right?

He should get stop and go pen sit in pits for 10 s. Which means 30 sec overall cause driving and leaving pit takes about 20 seconds.

He just destroyed Vettel podium finish. And Hamiton also gained points thanks to that in the championship.

Although who knows who will win the championship cause 3 races in and Merc hasnt won.
