We can easily name some of Europe's most recognizable cities, and of course we could easily name their most distinictive clubs. Cities such as Rome, Milan, London, Liverpool, Paris, Moskva, Belgrade, and Madrid come to mind, and of course all have had top clubs in recent times and decades past.

But sometimes I wonder if some of Europe's greatest city establishments suffer from the lack of top football...and by top football I mean good football; the brand of football that grabs attention and the headlines with incredible ease. The sort of football that spurs the crowds and wins championships at the same time. Perhaps we could look at Prague for this lack of football, however Sparta in their own right is a decent club who have had minimal success in the Champions League in recent years. Or perhaps to some extent, in more recent times, the French Capital has suffered from "lack of football," as I do not remember the last time PSG won Le Championat, so perhaps they are suffering as we speak.

There are many great European epicenters that do not carry a top football club on their shoulders....and for Europe being the "creme-de-la-creme" of football in the world, I can't help but think some city fans are starving for good football. For the history of each city we name, I am sure some deserve more in terms of the sport we will eternally love.

it will be my opinion that some of greatest football is found in smaller cities, the smaller more "blue coller" which makes it better

i think that some of the greaterness in football is lost by the biggest cities, the cities that the andy mentioned may actually in some case destroy the purest football in the wurld

Aha, so you think that the bigger cities that are more famous for football are destroying the sport? I can point to one example, and unfortunately a Russian is at the head of the whole debacle.

Turin is starved off it, definitely suffering from a 'lack of football'.

Fact is that now in football results are more important then then the very reason football was created. To entertain, yet some only care about results now, and its only going to get worst...

Hull is the biggest city in Europe never to have been represented by a team in its national top flight. That's a pretty sad record.
(That said, it's a big rugby city.)

This might deserve a thread of its own but I think it's more troubling with the trend that people care more for entertainment than the actual result.

If you're gonna use hard language then use it properly. :D

Anyways a popular quote here is "Winning is not the most important thing, it's everything". That is a quote every football fan in his right mind agrees with. Take for example the match against Real Madrid where we played really entertaining football. It's a great memory to all Juventus fans, but if we would have lost it would not have mattered how well we actually played. If you lose that's the one thing you'll remember, not that tunnel Zlatan did on Roberto Carlos.
The last thing I want to see in football is that the presidents start buying players to make some kind of entertainment team. If you want entertainment you can go to the movies or even better watch wrestling.

But I'd argue winning is the best form of entertainment of all.

You can leave the pretty-football-as-king philosophy to some exhibition, Harlem Globetrotters-like squad as far as I care.

I'm sorry but Turin is not starving from lack of football. The city of course carries Juventus, the most successul team in Italy, that has played exciting football many times in the past. Let's also not forget about Torino and their glory days many years ago.

When I look at big European cities, every city has his team or teams. Paris is suffering, PSG is crappy. So is Berlin (Hertha Berlin? what did they do?).
London must win the award. How many big teams are playing in this city?? Milan can also not complain.

As for Torino, they've got a huge team playing in their city, plus the lub of their heart: Torino, who will also be playing Serie A next year...

Yeah Paris is in shambles. What the hell is going on there. Also: Dublin (Ireland). In terms of cities that I like: Bordeaux (France), Oslo (Norway), Geneva (Switzerland)

Yeah, Bordeaux was a nice club some years ago, but they didn't achieve anything big.
As for the Swiss, they've always been pretty lame in football; but what happened to Servette Genève (It's Genève not Geneva, stop translating, OK :D) lately stunned me! What happened in there?? The Swiss are mostly knowed to be good managers and bankers...

Dublin is smthing else I guess, they're just not interested in footie. All they care about is Rugby, which is a great sport btw.

For Belgium, Antwerp isn't really brillant lately. They had FC Antwerp, the oldest club of Belgium (celebrating it's 125th aniversary this year!) aka "The great Old", who played the Final of the cup winners' cup, but that's all. Newly formed fusion club GBA (Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen) is yet to prove anything.
