The Viola kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 home win over Udinese. The visitors, who elected to rest several key players ahead of their upcoming Champions League qualifier, took a surprise lead when Maicousuel kept his cool to fire past Viviano on 28 minutes. Jovetic levelled matters midway through the second half and doubled his tally in injury time to hand Vincenzo Montella a victorious start to life in the Fiorentina dugout.
The new boss was then left to rue his side’s wasteful finishing as Napoli sneaked a narrow victory at the San Paolo. The Viola dominated possession and created several decent chances, but were made to pay as Hamsik and Dzemaili sent the hosts into a two-goal lead. Jovetic netted a consolation with three minutes remaining.
Strikes either side of half-time guaranteed Fiorentina their second win of the season at the expense of Catania. Jovetic chalked up his fourth goal of the campaign shortly before the break, while Toni came off the bench to bring the home faithful to their feet with a straightforward tap-in.
The Viola then travelled to face Parma in an entertaining game at the Tardini. Roncaglia’s spectacular strike put the visitors in front, but Valdes’ penalty secured a late share of the spoils after Toni was adjudged to have handled in the box.
