Azzurri: Ferrara to join Italy staff Saturday 21 January, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ciro Ferrara has joined Marcello Lippi’s staff for the Italy squad travelling to the 2006 World Cup, it’s reported.

The recently retired defender has always been valued as much for his good humour and role in helping younger players settle into a side as his undoubted playing qualities.

Since hanging up his boots after 500 Serie A appearances, seven Scudetto titles, a Champions League trophy, a Coppa Italia and four Italian Super Cups, Ferrara had been working as a commentator for Sky Italia.

Although the news is not yet official, reports suggest only details remain before he can take his place in the Azzurri set-up for the March 1 friendly against Germany.

The former Juventus and Napoli legend had 49 caps for his country, though it would’ve been more had a serious injury not ruled him out of the 1998 World Cup squad. Famously, he stayed with the players in France anyway as an unofficial morale-booster.

This also represents a reunion with Italy boss Lippi, who had worked closely with him during their time at Juventus.
