It pretty much looks like the top management don't admit that they made a long sequence of terrible mistakes for one simple reason. If they do admit them, they will be asked to explain why those mistakes happened and who's responsible for them. And if their explanations won't be convincing enough, all of them will be fired. And that probably includes Agnelli's resignation.

So, they keep sticking to their deeply flawed plan and coming up with half-plausible reasons to keep sticking to it for as long as they can.
