Roma are apparently considering a bid for Fabio Cannavaro this summer if they decide to sell Philippe Mexes.
The Giallorossi are keen to raise funds ahead of next season and Mexes is one of their most lucrative assets, someone still capable of attracting offers worth around €15m.
Roma would use the money to make Luca Toni's move from Bayern Munich permanent and strengthen other areas of the squad.
Reports claim that Roma's directors have identified two possible replacements for Mexes, including Cannavaro.
Juventus have an option to extend Cannavaro's existing one-year deal at the end of the season, but they aren't expected to do so.
Claudio Ranieri believes his experience could come in handy and rather cheaply too as the Italy captain would be out of contract and available on a free.
Alternatively, Roma are inquiring about the prospect of bringing Wolfsburg defender Andrea Barzagli back to Italy.
The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season and would cost around €7m.

“Am I washed up? No, I’m more experienced and more of an expert,” insisted the Juventus defender who turns 37 in September.
“I will keep going, even away from Turin. But if I win in South Africa, then I will quit football a moment later.
“I am optimistic, as Italy have a good mix of experience and youth. We can go to South Africa and defend our title the best possible way.”
Juventus have already hinted they will not be renewing Cannavaro’s contract, especially as he never quite made up with the fans after his 2006 move to Real Madrid.
“Do I regret returning to Juventus? Not at all. There are some regrets about this season with so many peaks and troughs, of objectives that we failed to achieve and seeing a Coach sacked.
“Ciro Ferrara is also a friend, so the disappointment over that was even worse. We were eliminated from the Champions and Europa League. The fault lies with everyone, the responsibility should be divided equally.”
Cannavaro explained to La Stampa how he handled the protests from supporters, who were particularly vicious towards him.
“Let’s just say I am not very popular among the ultras, but what happens off the pitch doesn’t interest me. I will only point out it cannot all be my fault. I have been playing for years and every now and then I have happened to win the odd Scudetto or World Cup.”
