Parma's financial future looks to be assured after former Real Madrid patron Lorenzo Sanz officially bought out the club.

Parma’s financial future looks to be assured after former Real Madrid patron Lorenzo Sanz officially bought out the club.

“Parma AC S.p.A announce that they have accepted an irrevocable proposal to buy 100% of the shares from the Spanish business Inversiones Renfisa S.L, led by Lorenzo Sanz, former President of Real Madrid. The transfer of the ownership and payment, one instalment having already been received, is expected by September 20.”

This is something of a shock move, as up until now the main candidate for a takeover bid was a Swiss holding company.

Sanz hopes to bring the Stadio Tardini side back to its glory days after its recent problems, as the bankruptcy of majority shareholders Parmalat forced the sale of star players.

The Gialloblu only avoided relegation this season by beating local rivals Bologna in a play-off and sold striker Alberto Gilardino to Milan for £17m.

I welcome this news. I've always liked Parma, but I also see them as a canary in the Serie A mine. If it dies, we are all in trouble. They represent the hope of keeping Serie A at something worth bothering for more than three teams.
