UEFA is hardly money making machine these days and personally I don't think it is that necessary to do well in this competition. Better qualify for CL than win UEFA and finish top 5 in the league. That is just the way it is with disproportionate amount of money involved in more prestigious competition.
Beside, I think the talent tool in modern day game is far deeper than in the past. Reserves arent as bad as they used to be back in the days when first 11 played week in and week out. I think it was worth taking a risk since Newcastle was hardly a team in form and have some injury issues themselves. Sampdoria, despite their recent horrendous run of forms, are no slouch and they must have felt the need to rest some of their stars. Anyway I have generally been impressed by the philosophy of Palermo, and it is pitty that they didnt get a deserved result of the game. But full credit to Newcastle, they defended doggedly and looked - I cant believe I said this - but quite solid, especially Titus Bramble.
