This is a placeholder for the 2005/06 thread.

I noticed that a whole bunch of different people making the essential threads in Misc Soccer makes the forum look rather cluttered, so I've just decided to make them all and see how it looks.

The level of this competition is going down the drain year after year. Cup Winners Cup was more fun than this shit.

The group stage makes it more fun. But who cares about this cup. As long as Juve's not in it....
well, even if we were, I guess we'd play a B-team and concentrate on Serie A, Parma style; and we'd still win the cup

Depor Edge Newcastle At Riazor
7/28/2005 2:09:00 AM
Deportivo La Coruna won the first leg of their Intertoto Cup semi-final, but the 2-1 scoreline meant Newcastle United take an away goal into the second leg next week.
The two clubs – more used to Champions League assignments in recent seasons – are striving to qualify for this year’s Uefa Cup tournament via the little-loved Intertoto.

And it was Depor who made the early impact, dominating play and going ahead on 11 minutes when Ruben Castro side-footed Diego Tristan’s cross into the net from 12 yards.

But Lee Bowyer levelled for the Magpies with a magnificent volley into the top corner, fired home spectacularly from a half-cleared corner two minutes into the second half.

However, Portuguese international centre-back Jorge Andrade quickly restored the Galician club’s lead with a low curler into the bottom corner of Shay Given’s net after he’d collected the ball on the halfway line and dribbled it unchallenged into the Newcastle area.

Graeme Souness was without Jermaine Jenas, nursing a hamstring injury, while Nicky Butt played despite suffering from a stomach bug.

Striker Michael Chopra only made it on to the bench after suffering concussion on Saturday - so Alan Shearer started the game as a lone striker, and saw little of the ball in the first half.

The tie is still anybody’s, with the return leg to come at St James’ Park on 3 August.

forget the magpies game, anyone catch strachan's first game in charge?!?

teeheehee:

Artmedia 5-0 Celtic

Celtic fell to one of their most embarrassing defeats ever in manager Gordon Strachan's first game in charge.

Juraj Halenar's tap-in gave Artmedia a 1-0 half-time lead in the Champions League second qualifying round tie.

But Blazej Vascak doubled the lead from close range after the break and Halenar added a thunderous volleyed third.

Martin Mikulic scored a fourth on the turn from the edge of the box and Halenar got his hat-trick with a low drive in injury time.

The result leaves Celtic in serious danger of elimination from Europe altogether, as the losers from second qualifying round games do not go into the Uefa Cup.

It was the visitors who first threatened eight minutes in when John Hartson headed an Alan Thompson free kick narrowly wide, though the offside flag would have ruled the effort out in any case.

Celtic were dealt a blow early on when Chris Sutton was forced out of the game with a suspected fractured cheekbone after a freak collision with Neil Lennon.

The home side seemed to take heart from that and put together a period of sustained pressure.

The closest they came to a goal was an opportunist effort from Vascak who tried to catch Marshall out at his near post, but the keeper was alert enough to turn it round the post.

Then Helenar broke free but sliced his shot wide.

The home side's keeper Juraj Cobej was called into action for the first time after 28 minutes to comfortably hold an Aiden McGeady free kick and a minute later he punched away a fierce Paul Telfer drive.

Artmedia were still enjoying the better possession and Marshall was forced into a good save to deny Daniel Tchur low to his right.

But Marshall was helpless to stop Artmedia taking the lead two minutes before half time.

Jan Kozak's pass split the Celtic defence wide open and as Branislav Obzera raced through on goal, he took Marshall and the chasing defenders out of the game by squaring the ball to Halenar who fired into an empty net.

In first half injury time Marshall got down well to keep out a goal-bound Jan Durica header.

Celtic fell further behind to a goal of superb quality. Kozak knocked a perfectly-weighted pass to Halenar, whose first-time cross was slammed into the net by Vascak.

Shaun Maloney came on for Maciej Zurawski and almost made an immediate impact when he found himself with just Cobej to beat, but the keeper blocked his shot.

Moments later he squared the ball only for McGeady to knock it over the unguarded goal.

Incredibly Artmedia added two more goals within the space of three minutes. First Halenar scored a terrific volley from a rather fortuitously awarded corner, when Marshall appeared to have kept the ball in.

Then sub Mikulic swivelled on the edge of the box to fire past Marshall.

Maloney curled a late free kick just wide with a few minutes left, leaving Celtic with a massive task in six days' time.

As this seems dead so - UP!

It seems finnish clubs are playing their last UEFA-matches of the season tonight. MyPa have somehow managed to concede 2 goals in under 30 mins. Case Allianssi is "a bit different" as some people told Allianssi - Brann Bergen was the most played match in bookies this evening. Odds acted "really strangely" also, nothing new though. So that current 0-1 at the 65th min is definitely not a surprise, well any result wouldn't be a surprise considering it's Allianssi.

Oh yeah. How sad it was to see relegation-bound Parma make it as far as they did with their second squad.

The last respectful series in quite a while that I can remember from this tournament was when FC Porto won it a couple years ago under Mourinho. Which was a foreboding of things to come...

The last final worth remembering was Feyenoord-Borussia Dortmund imo

Still though, for people like me from a small country, it's the only real possibility where are national honour can shine on a won trophee.
