Do you speak Italian? Mind you, this is pure curiosity, because I do understand where the Italians are coming from and it's not such a simple case.

Good for the Italians. It's always their fault no matter what, the English are never at fault even with Heysel, so good on them to propagate the problem and fuck up English fans. Always.

Anyone who has investigated the issue has come to the conclusion that all three parties were at fault: the English, the Italians (although if anyone might be considered innocent it's them) and the Belgians.

its very rusty, but i was working at a english speaking resort, but still i had to know enough to handle delivery orders.

They've curbed violence in stadia, though there are still clubs with problems. They're certainly ahead of Italy in this. At least, the EPL hasn't been held up recently because some fans killed a police officer.

Lippi: Italian football is better

Marcello Lippi insists Italian football is still better than English, because there is so little from either nation in their club teams.

This week Inter, Juventus and Roma were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, but the World Cup winner is not impressed.

“What superiority of English football over Italian? Results can be deceptive and these ones were. Besides, there is precious little of English or Italian in these teams,” he told Il Messaggero.

“Juve were absolutely on a par with Chelsea and neither side was better than the other. If not for the number of injuries, the Bianconeri could’ve gone through. It’s not enough evidence to suggest the English clubs are stronger.”

Roma only went out on a penalty shoot-out after drawing 1-1 with Arsenal on aggregate, although they too were decimated.

“In all my years in this sport I have never seen such bad luck,” mused Lippi. “Half the team was missing, then Juan got injured too and forced [Luciano] Spalletti to change tactics during the first half.

“Seeing how [David] Pizarro and [Francesco] Totti were limping at the end gave me goosebumps. They played with heart and courage for a wonderful romantic game in which everyone gave their all.

“Roma tried everything. Do you really want to consider such a defeat as proof of one team’s superiority?”

Inter failed to score a single goal in two meetings with Manchester United, although they hit the woodwork twice in the 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

“Inter struggled more in the first leg than the second. Let’s just say they were eliminated at San Siro. In this case we also need to consider that they picked the best team in the world right now, so losing to the best is no reason to dub it a crisis.”

Above all, though, Italy boss Lippi considers the fact the four English clubs fielded only 12 homegrown players during this round, including substitutes.

“Do you know what I say? It would be fun to have right now a match between Italy and England at international level.”

The Azzurri won the 2006 World Cup and reached the Euro 2008 second round, whereas the Three Lions did not even qualify for the latter tournament.

“Only the national sides represent a country, not their clubs,” continued Lippi. “The senior squad, Under-21, Under-18 and so forth. Tell [Fabio] Capello and let me know.”

The fact England boss Capello is Italian has not escaped Lippi’s attention either.

“He’s not English, but neither are any of the men in charge of the four English Premier League clubs in the Champions League.”

Lippi has such a biased opinion. he is obviously downplaying failure of italian football in europe's spotlight yet again. how much are they paying him to make such blatant ignorant comments?

italian football is factually weaker than the EPL but we all know that these are trends and we have to wait until that trend swings in our favor again

well i believe there isnt much difference between the top teams of england and italy, based on the CL games. To be completely honest i think overall we have a stronger league i mean not top 4 teams but the whole of serie a. England really only have the top 4 (man u,liverpool,chelsea,arsenal) while we have a more of a balance between the lower table teams and the top table teams, we have teams when they want to play well can compete for a CL spot, teams like sampdoria,fiorentina,udinese and to an extent napoli also. i just believe serie a is a harder league overall, more balanced.

but i believe our success as a national team is also in the quality of our serie B.

on the contrary i think that the Serie A is a weak league overall top to bottom

that is why you see bottom of the table teams beating top of the table teams. the talent pool is also watered down to the point that it seems only "washed" up players make their way to italy. the homegrown talent is either misused and wasted or somehow they end up on a catania or parma type club where they waste away into oblivion.

the competition isn't what it used to be but at seasons end the same 4-5 teams are in the top 10. not too different from the EPL but you and I both know that Serie A has seen better days.

However, I think the EPL has slightly gone ahead of the Serie A in terms of overall league quality. When u see some mid-table EPL teams spending more or as much as Juve does, the difference is going to tell sooner or later ...

IMO, the Uefa cup is a better gauge of how strong the overall domestic league is than the CL. Ironically, both Italy and England only have 1 team each in the tournament now.
The time when the Serie A was the strongest was also when the time the Uefa cup was almost always an Italian affair ...

juve, roma, arsenal and chelsea had 50/50 chance to pass this stage. Only united were clearlly much better than Inter (Inter always sucked in europe nothing new here). But overrall EPL is better than serie A or any other league in europe and foreigners + money played a central role in that for sure....

Here's the problem....

UEFA makes a coefficient list for the the results made in the last 5 years. Next year and in 2010/2011 there will surely be 4 italian teams in CL , but the problem may happen in season 2011/2012.

Now the Italians have a coefficient 62.620 and they are third placed, while the 4th placed Germany has 54.445. The Germans can't pass the Italians even if they win all the remaining matches in CL and UEFA this season.
This points for this season (2008/09) count for season 2010/2011 (a little illogical and complicated, i know) so the Italians have no fear for the next 2 seasons.

But like i said, UEFA counts the last 5 seasons and since Italy had a good 2004/05 season, and that season won't be counted from next year, the advantage Italy has in front of Germany will be lowered and if next year the Germans do much better than the Italians, then Italy will lose the 3rd place and in season 2011/2012 Italy will have only 3 teams in CL.

Italians must do better than the Germans next year.
