Things have become more open indeed but it has become easier for big league clubs to make it to the CL.

The current CL has still 2 years (?) contract in its current shape but slowly it is turning into a European League. I think after the current shape's contract is due we will witness even more teams, maybe larger groups and closer to a league format.

All of them are in the last part. Among the 40 "small league" teams.
Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Wales.... all of them.
Then the "smaller leagues" qualificaions will actually have 4 rounds, not 3 like you said(if wikipedia is to be trusted). Too see if I got it right:

1st qual. round: 6 champions from God-knows-where
2nd qual. round: 3xWinners from 1st qual round + 31 champions from smaller leagues(cro, serb, bih, norw, swe, etc.)
3rd qual. round: 17 winners from 2nd qual round + champions of belgium, greece and Czech Rep.
4th qual. round or playoff round: 10 winners from 3rd qual round battle it out.

Right?

The other 5 teams qualifications are pretty straightforward.

I named the countries and the teams that will go directly to CL and the ones who will play in the tougher qualifications group. If you don't see your country there, then you can be sure that it's in the last group of 40 teams :)
wheres australia? :p

do you guys think this system is better? or the real old school system of just the first team in their respective league gets qualification?

I didn't even count the 1st round because only 6 teams (Faroes, Luxemburgh, Andorra, San Marino etc) will participate there.
But yes, it's 4 rounds.

Btw, if someone's interested (and i'm sure you all are), Juve will, unfortunately, most probably be in pot3 for the CL groups draw.
But there is a chance that we might make it in the 2nd pot and this is how.

We are currently placed 24th on UEFA standings. In order to be in pot2 only 15 teams of the teams ahead of us on the standings can qualify for CL.

The teams bolded in black will certainly or 99% play in CL, while the teams in red certainly won't play in CL next year.
It's the rest we need to worry about:

1 Liverpool
2 Chelsea
3 FC Barcelona
4 AC Milan Ita
5 Manchester United
6 Arsenal Eng
7 Sevilla Esp

8 Bayern München
9 Olympique Lyon
10 Werder Bremen
11 Internazionale
12 Villarreal
13 Real Madrid
14 AS Roma
15 PSV Eindhoven
16 CSKA Moscow
17 Zenit St. Petersburg
18 FC Porto
19 Sporting CP Lisbon

20 Shakhtar Donetsk
21 Hamburger SV
22 AZ Alkmaar
23 Benfica
24 Juventus

So, 13 teams of the ones ahead of us will (almost) certainly play in CL. 3 of them certainly won't.
Of the other 7 teams, only 2 are allowed to qualify for CL if we want to be in pot 2.
Bayern and Lyon will probably be these 2 teams, so we need to hope that none of the other 5 will qualify if we wanna succeed in this.

Those 5 teams are:
1. Villareal (they musn't be in top4 in Spain.Currently they are 6th, only 3 pts behind the 4th placed Valencia)
2. Roma (they are 6th. They musn't be in top 4 in serie A)
3. PSV Eindhoven (they mustn't win the Dutch play offs. We need Ajax or someone else to be second in Holland)
4. Shakhtar (they'll surely be 2nd in Ukraine but in the qualifiers they can get Valencia or Arsenal and they can easily be eliminated that way)
5. Hamburg (we must hope that they won't end Bundesliga in top3. They are 3rd now, 2 pts ahead of the 4th team. Or if they are 3rd, we'll need them to lose in the qualifiers for CL)

It's hard to expect that all 5 of them will miss out on CL, but theoretically we still have a chance.

How did you conclude that Lyon will definitely be in the CL? they are currently third in the league table.

Well, i didn't bold Lyon, which means that i know that they are one of the teams that might not qualify for CL at all.

Of the 7 teams i didn't bold, only 2 can qualify for CL if we want to be in pot2. I see Bayern and Lyon as more realistic choices than the other 5, but yes, of course Lyon might miss out on CL and it would be great for us if they don't qualify.

Hopefully it will be the last time.
Unfortunately, it won't.
The points we won (or to put it better: that we didn't win) in seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08 will hunt us for the next 3-4 years.
It's gonna be a huge handicap for us and we'll keep struggling in pot 3, or at best pot 2 :(

how can we be 24th after 10 european games with 4 wins 5 draws and only one loss?
The results of the last 5 seasons are counted. Not only the last season.

We did not play in Europe for 2 years though.

It sure does. It means that in the following 3-4 seasons we'll get very tough groups. If we're in pot 3 we could easily get two favorites in our group. We can get an English team or Barcelona as a group holder and a team like Real or Bayern or Lyon or Porto or some other Spanish/German/ French team from pot 2.

Calciopoli fucked us in every possible way.

i meant we were (a little bit lucky though) in the 2nd pot this season...we played 10 games with 4-5-1 and now instead of improving our position we are in the 3rd pot 95%???wtf..
