Inter face UEFA expulson?
Tuesday 6 March, 2007

Inter could be in for Champions League expulsion after the riot that marred their exit at the Mestalla, as more details are emerging on what happened.

The Nerazzurri were already on a warning from UEFA after the 2005 derby with Milan was abandoned due to the fans throwing flares on to the pitch, one of which struck goalkeeper Nelson Dida.

They had to play their first four home games behind closed doors this season and were handed a record £132,000 fine, but this latest incident will bring back calls for the club to be expelled.

It is still not entirely clear what started the melee in Valencia, but at the final whistle Nicolas Andre Burdisso entered into an argument with Carlos Marchena.

As teammates were pulling them apart, David Navarro came off the bench and threw a punch at Burdisso that fractured the Argentine’s nose.

This sparked a furious reaction, as Julio Ricardo Cruz, Ivan Cordoba and Douglas Maicon chased Navarro across the pitch.

He was spotted on camera running back down the players’ tunnel with a smile on his face and this further angered the Nerazzurri players.

It is now emerging that the brawl continued inside the arena, as Francesco Toldo dived in to the Valencia locker room to reach Navarro and Esteban Cambiasso and Luis Figo tried to force their way in after him.

The security forces had to intervene and Coach Roberto Mancini was seen trying to lead his men away, but the situation had degenerated to such a degree that there was little he could do.

After the chaos had died down, Inter confirm that Valencia director of sport Amedeo Carboni went to personally offer his apology to his Nerazzurri counterpart Ernesto Paolillo for Navarro’s behaviour.

Inter President Massimo Moratti has told the media that a UEFA representative came into the locker room to speak with Burdisso and evaluate the situation.

Thankfully, there was no crowd trouble between fans, but the Inter team bus was pelted with rocks as it parked outside the Mestalla.

Great gesture from Carboni.

CL Reaction: Villa Condemns Fight, Marchena Blames Burdisso

The violence that marred the end of the game dominated post-match reactions. The blame game has started!

The game lacked spark for the 90 minutes, and as much as fans would have wanted something more, it most certainly wasn't the kind of spark the two teams gave us after the final whistle.

A brawl that started with Marchena and Burdisso getting involved ended in a free-for-all that continued as the teams head down the tunnel, and into the dressing room.

Carlos Marchena blames Nicholas Burdisso for starting it all.

"It was a madness on the part of Burdisso to come at us," he said. "He came for me and I pulled back."

Marchena withdrew, but as the players pulled Burdisso away, David Navarro caught him with a punch, breaking his nose, and that was where it all opened up.

David Villa meanwhile regretted the entire incident unequivocally.

"The end spoiled it, and we all have to agree," he said. "It was ugly and sad, and faced with a moment of madness, people were unable to contol themselves."

Focusing on the game - a rarity under the ciccumstances - he insisted it had been perfect: "It has been 180 perfect minutes, with two great games, and Inter have been very worthy opponents because the tie has ended on level terms.

"Luckily, it is us who go through.

"I hope this gives us a shot in the arm in La Liga, and that we can pick up three points in Pampalona [where the face Osasuna on Sunday]."

I haven't watched Valencia's match, but I do feel for Moratti who has been sure since the start of the season that his ultimate team would win the treble. I hope he can understand now why he is winning the Scudetto this season, that schlung.

Regarding Barca's, I think that Rijkaard's substitutions were evidences, of the size of a house, that he was just lucky in the previous couple of seasons. And still people compare him to great tacticians.

I thought that liverpool should have won, as they had many more clear chances, but it's goals that count, so I can't really argue with the result. I also didn't think rijkaards subs were that bad, eto'o was clearly off form, and barca were much better the second half.

too bad about chelski :(

Barcelona is going to be far too exposed on the flanks playing three at the back and having Messi and Ronnie pushed forward all the time. I'm calling it right now Pool will win this match down the flanks through crosses on the counter.
Somebody apparently gave me negative rep for this. :howler:

In actuality, Liverpool hit the post twice in the first half, one from a Riise rocket, which stemmed from Barcelona not being able to cope with Pool's forays on the flank. Pool had more chances in the first half, outshooting Barca 6-0 while being 35 minutes into the match, and really were the better side of the first half. Barca had more posession, however they did not cope very well with Pool's presence on the flanks and it nearly cost them. So apart from the result I was not that far off the mark with my prematch assessment.

Liverpool was the better side over the two legs and deserved to go through.
