Portuguese clubs face possible ban

Source: ITN

Manchester United and Celtic could be given a Champions League boost as Fifa has threatened to ban Portuguese clubs.

The governing body of world football has set the Portuguese Federation a deadline of September 14 to resolve a relegation row.

Gil Vicente were relegated at the end of last season for fielding an ineligible player, but they have launched a civil action against the Federation, contesting their punishment.

Fifa could ban Portuguese clubs and the national team from international competition, and that could mean Benfica are removed from the Champions League group where they are scheduled to face both British clubs.

That would leave United, Celtic and FC Copenhagen to fight for two places in the knockout stages of the competition.

A Fifa spokesman said: "There is a possibility of this existing. There is an issue in Portugal with the club Gil Vicente, who are in dispute with the Portuguese Football Association. Because of this we have asked the Portuguese Football Association to solve the problem internally or with the sporting governing bodies."

The spokesman added: "They have until September 14 to resolve the matter but after the deadline we would submit the case to the emergency committee and they would review the matter. A ban is an option and when a federation is banned there are no international matches to be played by that nation and the clubs so that would affect the Champions League."

Arsenal could also benefit as they have been drawn in the same group as Sporting Lisbon.

Champions League organisers Uefa have admitted they do not have a contingency plan to deal with the suspension of a team.

A Uefa spokesman said: "If Fifa decide to ban the Portuguese FA and its clubs then that will obviously have an impact on our competition but it is only at that point we would have a look to see what else Uefa could do.

"For instance, as one of the options, we would have to decide whether or not to play the group with just three teams."

I just saw Caneira's shot. Not bad for a defender! Eat that Inter!:D

Anyway, I think Roma is a good outside bet to reach the final as long as they can hit the form at the right time, and keep Totti, Mancini, Chivu, & De Rossi injury free. Their midifeld and central defence oozes with class and with Totti up there they have genuine match winner. Also I think the current format one group round and straight knockout competition helps weaker teams than prior competition rule.

I am going with an outsider, Lyon, Roma, Man U to pull it off than say Barca, Chelsea or Inter.

WHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAA

NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKAAAAAAAAAAAAMUUUUUUUUURAAAAAAA!!

EAT THAT SH*T MAN U!

:D :D :D

What a match! Totally absorbing.

Saha is certainly making the game interesting by himself. He should have jumped in the wall.

On a postivie note, our defence doesn't look too bad seeing these two teams plays. I can't believe Rio is getting paid 100K per yer, he is totally utter crap.:D

Lyon-Real Madrid 2-0 in the HT
:D

Forza Capello. Obviously he still hasnt forgotten his magic of loosing to lower teams.

Seriously though, I Lyon is a better team Madrid ATM, IMO. I betting them, Roma, Man U to do some damage in this year's tournament.

..

Lyon is absolutely toying with Madrid from all angles. The score could have easily been 5-0 by now.

Cannavaro's performance in the first half makes Boumsong look like a Maldini. :howler:
