Juve handed Arsenal test
Friday 10 March, 2006

Patrick Vieira will return to Highbury after Juventus were paired with Arsenal in today’s draw for the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Frenchman, who joined the Italian side from the Gunners in the summer for £14m, will take on his former teammates for the first time as they battle it out for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

The Turin giants, who just shaded past Werder Bremen in the last round, will travel to London first before welcoming back Thierry Henry, a Delle Alpi flop, in the return.

Milan, last season’s runners-up, will face French champions and current Ligue 1 leaders Lyon in the last eight.

The Rossoneri will use the game to get a closer look at Lyon defender Cris who is understood to be on the Italian club’s wish list.

Inter have been handed the simplest task on paper in the form of Villarreal, even if the Italian outfit will firstly have to overcome Ajax on Tuesday following the 2-2 draw in Amsterdam.

The other tie sees Barcelona, conquerors of Chelsea, take on Fabrizio Miccoli’s Benfica outfit after their success over Liverpool.

That game will also be a special occasion for Benfica boss Ronald Koeman after his goal gave Barca a European Cup Final win over Sampdoria in the 1990s.

The draw for the semi-finals also took place in Paris on Friday, with Juventus set to face Inter if both progress.

Milan or Lyon will obviously take on the winners of the Benfica-Barcelona tie in the other semi-final.

Quarter-Finals - March 28/29 and April 4/5
Arsenal v Juventus
Lyon v Milan
Inter/Ajax v Villarreal
Benfica v Barcelona

Semi-Finals - April 18/19 and 25/26
Arsenal or Juventus v Inter/Ajax or Villarreal
Lyon or Milan v Benfica or Barcelona
More reasons for me to believe how fast our side will exit the tournament.

Also if Juve, Inter and Milan make it through which I expect (actually Inter will have the biggest problems I feel) then the omens are good for Milan and worrying for Barcelona.

Barcelona's draw is terrible - as most teams were scared and wanted to avoid them. Instead they draw Benfica - the one team who will relish playing them. Back in 2003 when the Italian teams cornered the Spanish side - we all know what happened. Milan will prefer facing Barcelona over two legs to try and win the competition with the 1st leg at San Siro than over 90 minutes in the final.

The omens with Milan beating Bayern and both times they have reached the final under Ancelotti being decided with Sheva penalties. 3 of the last 4 possibly Italian teams - I am getting a pattern here and see Juve-Milan final again.

Last year Juventus lost the tie in a 'mad' opening 20 minutes - but failed to win the tie at home which is the complete difference. Liverpool with their history and focus are a better side than Arsenal I still think. Plus Juve were in indecision facing that Anfield match with Nedved returning from injury.

Italian journalist Gabrielle Marcotti was here on TV before and after the draw and called it right I think. The main match-ups in this tie will be Juve's ageing defence and how well they cope with Henry. But before people think this is all Henry showing the World what he can do before a move to Barca this summer - don't forget about Trezeguet. Huge rivalry between these two friends and whilst natuarlly the worry is on Henry - Arsenal will stuggle to keep Trezeguet out and it's his goals in these late stages that will the factor how far Juve go.

..

Inter has been really lucky to face crappy teams in the group stage, last 16 with Ajax, and now Villareal. It could have not gone any easier for them to reach the semi's.
