Udinese's Champions League hopes evaporated five minutes from time with Barcelona's victory, sending them into the UEFA Cup.
The Friuli outfit found itself needing only a point to qualify for the final 16 of the Champions League for the first time in its history. They could even afford to lose as long as Werder Bremen did not beat Panathinaikos in the other game.
Barcelona, who were already through, left Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto'o at home, while Udinese fielded Vincenzo Iaquinta despite a recurring injury. Coach Frank Rijkaard was also left behind in Spain after a bout of bronchitis.
Udinese had the first chance after nine minutes, as Iaquinta robbed a Barca player in midfield and floated in a cross for Antonio Di Natale, whose volley flashed back across the face of goal.
Moments later, Iaquinta held up Cristian Zenoni's cross for Jose Luis Vidigal and some desperate defending charged down the shock.
However, on the counter-attack Ludovic Giuly's fierce strike rattled the frame of the goal with Morgan De Sancis beaten.
Jorquera smothered a Di Natale volley at the near post, while De Sanctis performed a similar trick on a deflected Ezquerro effort.
Iaquinta's volley was charged down by Belletti and seemed to be heading for the target, while Udinese had a promising opportunity cut short by a debatable offside position.
There was real danger in the other area, as Deco's attempted backheel flick from six yards caught Nestor Sensini by surprise, but was off target.
There was bad news for Cosmi's side, as Zenoni went off with a heavily bruised ribcage and made way for young midfielder Tissone.
Giuly was extremely unlucky, as he got past fellow Frenchman Vincent Candela and rolled the ball under De Sanctis, but saw his delicate finish blocked by the upright. It was the second time the former Monaco star had hit the frame of the goal.
Barcelona again went close after the break, as Belletti sprung the offside trap on Giuly's through ball and he struck the side-netting rather than cross for the unmarked Henrik Larsson.
Cosmi's first tactical substitution saw Stefano Mauri introduced for the distracted Sulley Ali Muntari. He picked up a knock at the weekend and was clearly not his usual self.
There was an air of palpable tension hanging over the Stadio Friuli, as Udinese seemed happy to allow Barcelona possession so that they could push forward on occasional counter-attacks.
