Arsenal have raised their offer for Laurent Koscielny, the Lorient centre back, to about £8 million. The French side have asked for Francis Coquelin, the midfield player, or Armand Traoré, the defender, as part of the deal. “There have been discussions between the clubs, but for now, nothing is done,” Coquelin said. “I will not be against a return to France, but what I want most is a club where I will get game time.”

Premier League wage bill shows steep rise

Wages at Premier League clubs have shown a worrying 11% leap to £1.3billion overall, according to an annual report of football finance.

Business analysts Deloitte's report claims the rise is a concern because wages last year accounted for 67% of the turnover of all 20 clubs - a notable increase after a decade where the proportion had stayed between 58% and 62%.

Experts believe the change could pose a problem to the English top flight with UEFA's new rules saying that from 2012 clubs in European competition will only be allowed to spend what they earn.

The clubs' wage bill rose by £132million over the previous year and Dan Jones, director of Deloitte's Sport Business Group, said that should act as a warning - especially in the light of Portsmouth being forced into administration by over-spending.

Jones told Press Association Sport: "The wages increase is definitely something people should be concerned about, and that will be even more the case when the UEFA initiatives are in full swing.

"This report clearly shows there is an issue there to be dealt with.

"The revenue story is still very positive and has proved resilient to the recession but the clubs have to get costs under control."

Reliance on 'sugar daddies' such as Manchester City's Sheikh Mansour is also increasing.

The report states: "A model of profit maximisation is now pursued by a very limited number of clubs and, whilst some clubs seek to break even on a consistent basis, the emerging norm for many Premier League and Championship clubs appears to require significant ongoing benefactor support.

"As such we appear to be seeing a continuing shift from a sustainable 'not for profit' model towards one with potentially calamitous consistent and significant loss-making characteristics."

Bundesliga tops Euro leagues' profits

http://www.rte.ie/business/2010/0608/football.html

Serie A's revenues increased by €73m (5%) to €1,494m, ahead of Ligue 1 whose revenues (€1,048m) exceeded €1 billion for the first time.

Serie A 1.5
EPL 2.3

That's 800,000,000 more, it will probably be closer to 1,000,000,000 for 09/10.

Serie A is a sham all hail the mighty Bundesliga :delpiero:

The Bundesliga recorded an impressive 10% of revenue growth to €1,575m and moved ahead of La Liga, whose growth to €1,501m was driven by treble winning Barcelona and Real Madrid, whilst total revenues declined at the other 18 clubs.

On CNBC World's Squawk Box this morning they had a football financial analyst from Deloitte. He said that this level of wage inflation in the Premier League will not be able to continue at this pace.

Well, no shit.

The Prem is just another bubble waiting to burst.

I was thinking along the lines of a back up. Especially with Riera leaving (or he was before Rafa left). He's also more of a winger than both Babel and Jovanovic.

You should forget about him, he isn't good enough for Arsenal ;)
Arsenal should just leave him for us and focus on Cole.
:D

I'm pretty sure 90% of the people here, that are drooling over him, me included, have not seen more than 3 games of this guy in the last year. So don't beat yourself up, join the hype. :excited:
Youtube videos ftw!

Yup, he's a decent defender and he's had a really good season with Lorient. Its his first season at the Ligue though, so he would be a risk. But what i like about him most, is his ability in the air, i wouldn't mind us signing him at all, but 8M Pounds is a bit too steep for someone who has just had one season at top level football.

Irate Liverpool fans burn US flag

(AFP) – 5 days ago

LONDON — Over 500 angry Liverpool fans marched on the club's Anfield ground on Thursday and burned the US flag in protest at the English giants' American owners, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Five-time European champions Liverpool have been saddled with 351 million pounds of debt since American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett took over the club in February 2007.

Spanish coach Rafael Benitez was sacked on Thursday after a season that saw Liverpool finish seventh in the Premier League and crash out of the Champions League at the group stage.

The protest had already been organised prior to confirmation of Benitez's dismissal, however, with fans invited to join a march to the stadium on social networking sites Twitter and Facebook, according to the Telegraph.

"This is another example of how this club has become the biggest farce in town. In a sense, Benitez is just collateral damage. When you look at Liverpool in a general manner, who will want to take the club on?" said Paul Rice, of the supporters? group Spirit of Shankly, quoted by the paper.

Fans also called for the dismissal of managing director Christian Purslow, who was brought in to secure new investment in the club but has so far failed to do so.

Photographs on the Telegraph's website showed Liverpool fans carrying banners that read 'Thanks Rafa. Purslow and Yanks Get Out Now' and 'Tom and George Tell Lies'.

Another picture showed them burning a hole in the American flag.

If I were Hicks, I'd take all the club's capital and buy call options on England's FTSE 100 index reaching 25,000 over the next two years. That will show 'em.

Apparently your right Chester, it seems that we have a agreed a contract in principal with Joe Cole, but it is subject to a medical after he comes back from the World Cup. He has to prove his fitness first.

If so, that is great news to be honest, Joe Cole is quality.

Calm down there dude

He's a good player but hardly what you call quality. His best years are beyond him. Hopefully I'm proved wrong.

Only because he can't stay fit for a prolonged period of time, when he's fit, he is quality. One of the best attacking midfielders England possess.
