No you're not.
If he speaks Italian, if he feels Italian, then he's Italian. No-one can take the right how to feel from you. Of course, if you don't have a passport than officially you're not Italian, but to me you are what you feel that you are.

Your example was bad though. You made it look as if you're not letting that guy be a Brazilian.
No, of course he can be a Brazilian if he feels that way. If he lived all his life in Brazil, and he has a Brazilian passport and at the same time he feels Brazilian despite being born to Italian parents. Who am i to tell him he's not Brazilian.

But at the same time, if he speaks Italian and feels Italian, then who are we to tell him he's not Italian?

If you have passports from two countries and you have some connection to two countries then it is your right to choose who you play for. There is no way to tell someone where they are from unless it is totally egregious.

As if he ever stood any chances to play for Brazil.

The point here is to choose a country when 2 countries want you to play for them. Lots of players who could have played for Switzerland, Australia, Austria, even Germany, chose Croatia over them.
In USA's case though....

Edit: Actually, that Scottish dude whose leg was broken on Wednesday was the only one who chose USA over another country. But he's just one in a dozen or more.
Holden isn't really "Scottish" at all. He's very much American with the way he acts and that's because he did grow up here. Just like Rossi. Rossi probably isn't Italian at all.

Btw, what about the stateless ethnic minorities?

Lets say I'm a Kurd from Turkey. Will I be ruining international football if I choose to play for Austria instead of Turkey, even though I only lived in Austria for 4 years and they gave me the passport just because I'm a good football player?

Turkey doesn't recognize me, they don't treat me well.
So?

I don't mind a player choosing based on birth place or parentage.

I don't like players choosing based on the nationality of grandparents or based on getting citizenship just because they have lived a few years of their adult life somewhere.
It can be even worse. I think it was Qatar (or Bahrain) national team which bought and recruit Ethiopian players to play for them in the Olympic games.

Moved to France when he was 8.
Those are the only ones I feel are difficult to call; where someone moved at a young age.

I think a rule that the SFA are looking at where a player would be eligible if they completed at least five years of schooling in a country is quite interesting.

I'm just messing with Andy. But the boy learned to control himself. :D

I've been one of the loudest US football supporters here (from the non-Americans), but I know Andy's soft spots and I like to play with it.
Underrating US football mixed with forza Tottenham was a winning combination. :p
Don't be such a Radovan Karadzic Srebrennica-head!

I remember that and I fear it happening in football.

What's to stop a rich country buying a bunch of Brazilians, giving them citizenship, and making it to a World Cup because of it?

Qatar's whole national team consists of non Qatari's that get a temporary Qatari passport to play for the Qatari NT. The passports are revoked after the player retires from international football.

Disgusting team that should be banned from International football.

Qatar make no secret of their plans to do just that in time for the WC that they are planning to host.

Tough shit.

It's all about birth place and parentage, for me.
