Imagine what people would be saying had he flopped in the EPL and then pulled off these kind of performances in Serie A tho.

Elia and Pelle are kinda proving the worthlessness of the "Gervinho-argument"
The stats also prove the worthlessness of the "Gervinho-argument". People didn't watch him in the EPL. He did the exact same thing for Arsenal as he does at Roma. He rampaged against Premier League defenders too, but just like in Serie A, he just could not finish. His goal and assist numbers per appearance are only marginally better. Roma fans are just more accepting of his poor end product than Arsenal fans were.

47 games -- 11 goals -- 13 assists in Serie A for Roma

46 games -- 9 goals -- 9 assists in Premier League for Arsenal

This, plus Roma's playstyle suits him more. Arsenal was like a poor man's Barca at times, almost with a Tiki-Taka style of play, Gervinho really doesn't fit in there.

The biggest difference is that Arsenal considered him not good enough with how he played there, mostly due to his inability to finish chances, or at least create assists, while Roma seems to consider him a godsend and one of their most important players. His performance for each team has been almost identical in quality, even with regards to tangible results, only Arsenal clearly seems to have more ambition, which is shocking considering Arsenal's general lack of ambition with regards to transfer market activity until very recently.

Yeah, he had much more competition at Arsenal, while at Roma he's been an undisputed starter. Iturbe could've maybe changed that (though they'd probably play both at the same time), but he's been a massive flop so far.

And you gotta remember the position where Roma was in when they signed him, I think they finished 7th the season before. Gervinho was a great transfer for the midtable club they were at the time, but it just shows that they're not really a top club, at least not yet (and hopefully neither in the future).

:agree:
Good player, if he gets that finishing right he'd be the African Robben

Let me wade into the Gervinho debate here. I've watched him since his Le Mans days, back when Le Mans was one of the most entertaining Ligue teams(at the time they had Sessegnon, Le Tallec and Romaric) all of them were promising young players playing a very quick counterattacking brand of football. Gervinho was amazing back then, him and Sessegnon struck an amazing partnership. He moved to Lille and he won the Ligue there in a team that had Hazard, Cabeye, Bodmer, Abdel Kader Keita and co, and he was also one of the best players in Ligue. He used to rip teams to shreds, naturally I was quite happy with his move to Arsenal at a time when we barely spent any money, I thought he would be a hit for us. He was terrible to be honest, he had terrible end product, I was very happy to see him go.

That being said, even when he had poor end product he was still an amazing dribbler, and always created chances for himself, so I wasn't completely surprised that it worked out for Roma. It became a psychological thing after a while at Arsenal, he started missing sitters I've never seen him miss anywhere else, and that happens sometimes, it has nothing to do with the quality of the EPL or whether or not it was a difficult league IMO. As Ocelot said, at the time Gervinho was here, we were a poor man's Barcelona, attempting to play a possession based style that we were not good enough for, and that harmed him, because he rarely had the space he craved to operate in. I'm willing to bet if he played for an EPL team that suited his style, he'd do just as well if not better than his level at Roma. People buy too much into players failing at a certain league IMO, most of the time conclusions are made that fit people's agenda.
