At this point, I think based on FIGC definitions for home grown and U-21 players (Pjaca included as under 21 as he was under 21 at the start of the calendar year), we have the right number of squad players. So, if Zaza leaves, we should expect a new arrival in midfield. Allegri kind of made it clear we are not after another forward.

So my guess is, we get 1 mid if Zaza leaves. We get 2 mids if Pereyra / Hernanes leaves.

However, the press links to any new mids is relatively WEAK. The strongest links are that of a Zaza exit to Wolfsburg and Pereyra to Watford. Links to players like Eriksen, Isco, Fabregas, and even Matuidi is weak. Brozovic is the strongest link so far.

I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever comes could be out of left field. Either that, or we end up with a panic buy.

I just hope that we sort out the new arrivals before we deal on the sales.
I think they are just waiting to make sure the players are sold before they buy anyone due to squad limits. The squad is full right now I think.

Yes.....I think we will agreements in place (Zaza to Wolfsburg & Pereyra to Watford)......but we may pull the pin on that if we can't sign any one of our objectives. Makes sense to do to the deals at around the same time.

...why is everyone fapping for Matri?

Feels like I'm not getting a joke.

Is signing him really freeing up that much cash we didn't have already for a CM?

I think its only for nostalgia! Matri or Zaza or whoever else would hardly get a game with Higuain and Mandzukic in the team. Pjaca can also play as a CF if needed. I think he would be a fine one at that too.

Links to Fabregas and Isco is all fine and all, but what we really need is a tough ball winning warrior midfielder who has some skill on the ball but adds some real steel to the team.

Pogba had that, Vidal had that. Pjanic is more of a technical player, Khedira is injury prone as is Asamoah. We really need a Vidal type player. I don't know much about Matuidi but he fits the profile from what I understand. But they want 50m for a 30 year old - so pass. Don't know who it will end up being. Allan from Napoli or Naingollan from Roma would be GREAT but no way we are doing any more business with them in this window at least.

I think Diawara can become that tough tackling player.

The question is how long it would take til he reaches a good level.

Hopefully Marchisio getting healthy and Khedira staying healthy means the 4th and 5th choice players won't be relied upon too much.

So according Spanish newspapers James is has been told he is not needed by Real. Would he fit here ?
No way in hell are we getting James. He is going to go for 50-80m if Real manage to find a buyer. Chelsea rumored to want him. That may open Fabregas. Who knows. Although Fabregas rumored to want to go to Real Madrid - so we may be left out here. I doubt Real would want to sell BOTH James and Isco. Kovacic maybe though.

Diawara is still raw but no question a really promising player, what is he 19? and is already a protaganist in Serie A with Bologna. We need a tough midfielder to raise the tempo and bring his team-mates up. Marchisio is tough but plays deep. Vidal and Pogba used to lift the rest of the midfield when we were a bit slow to the ball and to the tackle. As much as I like Khedira, he is not that type of player. Sturaro is that type of player but he lacks quality at the end of the day.

I really like Allan - I still remember how he owned Pogba when he was playing for Udinese. We need that kind of player. Tough, rugged, with mojo.

Sell Zaza, Pereyra, Hernanes and bring in Isco and Cuadrado!
Sounds exciting but.....

I like Cuadrado but I struggle to see where he would fit in. Alves and Lichsteiner for wing backs, so if we brought in Cuadrado he would be used more like a attacking winger / mid. Not sure I see Allegri wanting us to splash cash purely for that purpose. Isco we know Allegri is an admirer. However, Isco would cost 40-50m and therefore should be a starter. If he is a starter, would he fit in a 352? Do we change system to 4312 to accommodate him? Not so sure.

My gut feel is we will end up with Brozovic, Matuidi or Witsel and maybe Diawara. Just a gut feel.

But if it were me, if there are no suitable midfielders who would lift the quality of the midfield substantially and be a regular starter, then I don't see the point in doing anything actually. Would rather keep Pereyra.

So far we have only signed top quality players. Hopefully it will stay the same and we don't ruin the mercato with another Hernanes esque signing.
