Our midfield is a mess if Pogba leaves.
Our midfield would be more of a mess if we don't find a Marchisio replacement. Right now we are going from Pogba to Pjanic which is palatable. But it looks like the vice-Marchisio is still Hernanes which is a really big problem.

Yeah, but it looks like there's not a lot interesting options on the market either. I don't expect us to make up for the loss of Pogba adequately. Hoping to be surprised by September.
In my eyes Pjanic was the actual man for man Pogba replacement.

Less physical, less individualistic but a smoother operator in midfield. Now that we don't need our MF to babysit out attack that could be a very good thing.

So if we can find a physical ball winning DM to rotate with Marchisio and add physicality, and a b2b mid to replace the injury prone Khedira our midfield could at least be on par with last seasons.

I would say I don't see us topping our old Vidal - Marchisio - Pogba midfield though. Unreal midfield sadly it didn't have much time playing with a competent attacking force in front of it.

I meant our midfield as a whole, we're yet to have a Marchisio replacement either and Khedira is made of glass. Pjanic alone doesn't solve our midfield issues, even if, coupled with the transfer of Higuain, is not that bad and could potentially make us forget about what Pogba provides.

But I guess you think the same judging by your post.

The 25 player limit is a serious issue here. I think we'll end up getting an experienced HG for the 3rd keeper spot.

With Buffon, Neto and HG 3rd, we'd have 22 spots for non-GKs. It means 19 players apart from Marchisio + Marrone - I don't think the 4th HG quota will be used, but we could use youngsters like Mandragora unlimitedly. So, I'm considering Mandragora is the 25th guy, even though he doesn't count officially.

If 352 is our main scheme - and it still is - we need the 5 CBs. It means 3 GKs + 5CBs + 4 FBs, with 13 spots left including Marchisio, Marrone and Mandragora.

Guaranteed CMs: 6 - Marchisio, Pjanic, Khedira, Pogba's replacement, Marrone (HG), Mandragora (youth)

Guaranteed forwards: 3 - Dybala, Higuain, Pjaca.

This would make 4 spots left for 2CMs + 2 forwards or 3CMs + 1 forward.

My impression is that if Gabigol comes, it's 2 forwards. If he doesn't, I don't think we'll necessarily look for another forward - we might just keep another CM. And I don't think he's coming. So I'll bet on 3 + 1, specially considering Marchisio is injured and his recovery doesn't seem flawless, Khedira is Khedira, Marrone is more to fill the squad in and Mandragora is a long bet due to age and the main reason he stays till december is probably his injury.

So, we'd have 3 CMs spots for 5 guys: Lemina, Pereyra, Hernanes, Sturaro, Asamoah.

And 1 forward spot for either Zaza or Mandzukic.

How good is the guy?
So basically we need to sign Verratti

From an unreal midfield to an unreal attack. Could this mean we will walk over the norjaellands but struggle physically in midfield against stronger opposition .

As long as our midfield gets some solid reinforcements i'd be much more happy with a great midfield and a world class attack than with a world class midfield and a 'decent' attack. Better in Europe, and Serie A is redundant either way. It's ours minus a fuck up.

Khedira and Marchisio were by far our best midfielders in the big european games and made an incredible impact.

Pogba ? One great game against City.

Hernanes was quite good against Munchen. Sturaro was amazing against madrid last year and city this year.

We lose nothing of the performing players, and actually, Pjanic always plays good in big games, so thats that aswel.

I wish we could get Vidal back
He is the only player that if he replaces Pogba we will remain as good as we are right now!

If 'less impactfull then Vidal' makes you a choker, then nearly every midfielder in the game is
Good to know you are not one of those "He is a choker" geniuses

Herrera has some Vidal elements to his game, from what I'm seeing here on Youtube. Fights for the ball in an aggressive fashion, seems to have a tireless engine and there's something about how he dribbles, passes and shoots that reminds me of Arturo. That said, Arturo is more physically imposing and powerful, and Herrera seems to have much more pace.
