Betis waited until the end of the season before entering into contract extension talks with any of their players and have received a significant rebuttal with the news that Edu has rejected their offer of a renewal.

The attacking midfielder has spent four years at Betis since he joined from Celta Vigo, but felt that the new deal undervalued his importance to the club and has therefore turned down the offer.

Edu seems keen to sit out the final year of his contract in order to move on a free transfer next summer, but indicated that he was willing to follow the club's wishes if they decide to move him on while he still has some market value.

"I have been in Spain for eight years and I am very happy here. It is clear that I have built up a good relationship with the club during my time at Betis and for that reason I will do whatever the club sees fit," he told Marca.

Villarreal are thought to be preparing a swap deal involving Guille Franco in order to obtain Edu's services, and Betis may be willing to enter into negotiations now as opposed to watching the Brazilian leave for nothing at the end of next season.
