The Stade Abbe Deschamps temporarily turned into a retirement home for the perpetually unabashed and terminally confused this week.

Wily old granddad Guy Roux let loose with a gem of perceptive interpretation as the Auxerre super-boss criticised both Serie A and the Premiership. Forget about the Golden Ball or Writers Player of the Year, what about Simile of the Season?

Responding to critics who had pointed to the lack of goals and quality strikers as well as a defensive mentality in the French Ligue 1, Roux quipped "If you took all 20 Ligue 1 teams and played them home and away against their Italian counterparts, relative to their position in the table, I guarantee you that, over all, France would win." He might have a point.

"It’s actually because of the high standard that we see less goals. To have more goals you need to have very rich teams and very poor teams. Then the poor will take a hiding every week and everyone can say ‘Ligue 1 - isn’t it magnificent!"

Reacting to the vaunted quality of the EPL, he points out that "It isn’t just Chelsea and Arsenal in England either you know. There’s also Fulham and Southampton? Really?"

Fair is fair, everybody is entitled to their opinion. Especially the esteemed Roux……"For me a high-scoring match is sometimes like an ’easy’ girl and we can be mistaken of its true quality…I prefer a good 0-0. It resembles a girl full of charm and virtue and harder to catch!" Fantastic.

A hugely experienced tactician that has given so much to the French game and the development of its youngsters, old footballing codgers like Roux also make the practice of sports journalism a thoroughly worthwhile and entertaining hobby.

I doubt it very much, If all teams in Italy and England played like he said all teams corrisonding to there position I doubt very much France would win. If all teams played to there best of course. Lyon are the most dominate force in France, but does anyone believe they could beat (on form) and on the teams in the Top 3 it Italy or France? Could Monaco beat Arsenal or Milan? Could Lille beat Man Utd or Inter?

I get his argument he means that there is too much of a 'gulf' in class, he means that because in France there isnt as big of a 'gulf' that the chances are that French teams would be better then the lower down of Italy and England, but I doubt it very much. Its about competition, the better some teams are in Italy and England, the competition from those teams means that naturally the smaller clubs in those country will natural grow.

Personally I think teams like Southampton are better then the likes of Istres and Bastia.
