In Holland you are allowed to get your driver's license when you turn 18. It wasn't until I was 21 that I had saved enough money to get it though (the whole thing cost me a solid €2000,-).

You have to take one theory test showing you know all the rules (obviously) and then one practical test, which I had to do twice cause I cut someone off changing lanes the first time

Oh, there's also a minimum amount of 1h driving lessons you MUST take before you can take the test. I think it's 30 or something... When I did mine, they cost €35,- per lesson.

Yeah, same here. Law required minimum is 35 lessons, at 7.5 € per lesson.

Whole thing cost me around 400€ and took around 2 months.

Costs alot indeed.

I started learning at 16 and 9 months. Had some lessons and passed the theory test. Then I was allowed to drive for a year (sort of test time), with a lot of restrictions: one of my parents must be with me in the car, no more than 2 passengers, not between 10PM and 6 AM, and so on...

When I was 18 I could pass the test. I got it on first attempt

At 16 one can take a theory test of road rules etc. to get what's called their Learner driver license, with which they're allowed to drive, but only under the supervision of a driver holding a full license.

Once a Learner driver has held their "Ls" for 1 year, and has had at least 50 hours of driving experience (not necessarily professional lessons, I didn't have to take any) they can take a practical driving test to get their "P1" (provisional) license.

After 1 year of having their P1 license, another theory test (called the Hazard Perception Test) is taken, which basically requires drivers to touch a computer screen when they would stop/turn/slow down in a simulated driving environment. Upon passing this test, the P2 license is obtained. The provisional license has certain restrictions such as max speed limit and legal blood alcohol level.

After 2 more years of holding their P2 license, a driver can apply for their full unrestricted license by passing a test that combines theoretical knowledge and practical driving skills.

They didn't used to have this system until the Roads & Traffic Authority realised that they could make a killing by forcing drivers to take various tests (at around $60 a pop) to climb the driving ladder :groan:

In Malaysia you go for the theory etc at the age of 16. But you are only allowed to drive legally once you get your license at the age of 17. Sadly, considering that I skipped a year because of this IQ test I am a year younger than my peers. All of them can drive.

Except me :(

So what part Sydney u from?
I'm currently living in Dural, which is pretty far from the city... I moved here from Epping a little over 2 years ago. I study at the University of NSW, and I went to James Ruse from years 7-12

Yeah, in a nice, comfy Golf V too :D :p

Actually, it's even cheaper, it's only 7.5€ when you take only a few lessons, like 4 or 5. Wen you take more you get a discount, 35 lessons for around 230 € ;)

Thats what, 6.6 € per lesson :D

Here its like $70 for ten lessons

You can get a license when youre sixteen but need a special permit that isnt hard to get, also you can pay a person that does everything for you so going and doing the practical/theorical exams isnt necessary. A lot of people do it this way because it isnt expensive to pay someone and its a pain in the butt to go to the place and get it done legally. Because my mother is a lawyer, she made me go and take both exams so I could get my license fairly. The exams were quite easy and just about everyone here can get a license, thats why people here (myself including) suck at driving
