    Yep...

    In the undergrad I never had problems with getting alcohol.

    Except for after midnight- it was simply not sold.

    Yeah, but for example you dont get alcohol at underage parties (unless theyre like held in a college dorm or the people's parents dont know anything about the party) and you cant go out to clubs because youure too young... unlike people in Europe/ latin america where they drink WITH their parents, get alcohol at parties (with parents knowing) and can start legally going to clubs when theyre 18

    but would the whole drinking culture be so prevalent if not for the 'novelty value' of alcohol in the first place?

    Yeah, some states have these laws...

    One particular one I hate is that you can buy liqior only in specialized stores.
