But will we as a team actually score more goals if we lose the importance of Dybala in our build up play? I really doubt that. Imo Dybala is at his best when he has complete freedom just as he currently has.

Playing Dybala deeper allows the team to utilise much more of his qualities. It allows us to combine and get forward MUCH easyer, especially against tough opponents.
He aids the regista and other cm to combine. Aids the winger that is rushing forward. Aids the Striker who controlled down a long pass by Bonucci.
THIS is why the 4-2-3-1 completely blew the 4-3-1-2 and 4-4-2 out of the modern game.
And when we get the ball forward, he should learn how to free himself up to receive the ball in good positions from:
- combination with cm's.
- through pass from a winger
- combination from the striker
- cutback cross from an overlapping fullback
- Bonucci
Against Barcelona, he had a masterclass performance. That offensive positionning he did there, THAT is what he needs to do.
Sure, it was aided by Higuain drawing all defenders onto him, but thats what you got a complete forward for.
The 4-2-3-1 isn't blowing anything away from the modern game. Madrid, Barca, Atletico, Bayern, Porto, Napoli, Dortmund, Monaco, City, PSG, etc. didn't play 4-2-3-1 in CL.
We are pretty much the top only team that played it in europe. Playing with 2 CMs is a challenge.

- I said 4-2-3-1 completelty blew 4-4-2 and 4-3-1-2 out of the modern game
- You list a load of teams playing 4-3-3
- You also list two teams playing 4-4-2
- One of them got destroyed by us, playing 4-2-3-1
Yes, no one plays 4-2-3-1. Its not blowing anything out of the water. Its just false. I can also say "the 2-3-1-4 completely blew the 4-3-1-2 out of the water" and it would work just as well. Because no top team in CL is playing it, just like they are not playing the 4-2-3-1.
If there is a formation that's blowing stuff away now, its the 4-3-3, not the 4-2-3-1.
More teams in CL played a 4-4-2 than a 4-2-3-1, that tells you what's more popular. Madrid changed to a 4-3-1-2 at times when Isco was shinning at the end of the season.
Mercato is here to shape your formation and if we make one bad move it might result in a total failure of a year. Possibly even more if we perma switch to 4-2-3-1 and screw up our mid duo.
Then you can change whatever you want but we'll most likely play like shit.

The difference between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 is how advanced the third midfielder is
Both are double wing formations with one midfielder beeing more advanced. And both completely blew non double wing formations out of the water with the 3-5-2 the only real alternative
The reason more teams play 4-3-3 is because there are plenty of exciting wingers, and bitter few able trequartista's. We got one.
4-4-2 is only played by teams out of lack of quality

4-4-2 is only played by teams out of lack of quality
The 4-2-3-1 is very different from the 4-3-3. All the midfield roles are different. They are pretty much the main examples of opposing football ideologies. VERY different midfielders are the ones needed to make a 4-3-3 work.
Of formations that are similar, the 4-2-3-1 and the 4-4-2 is the most alike.
Saying that teams only play 4-4-2 out of lack of quality is ridiculous enough. Saying it while also arguing for a 4-2-3-1...
From Tolisso presentation:
"The confirmation comes directly from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "The deal for Douglas Costa with Juventus is good, the signals are postponed," said the managing director of Bayern Munich, during the presentation press conference of Corentin Tolisso.
The Brazilian later returned to Germany, where he returned to Munich for resumption of training and told the German club he wanted to go to Juventus. In the next few days, therefore, the deal might start to define itself."
