I can't say this in Swedish so I'll tell you why in English. It's because Finnish belongs to the finno-ugric languages. It's not "german-based" language like Swedish, Norwegian or Danish.

I can't understand a word when someone speaks Hungarian, but still they claim that our languages are pretty similar... Estonian is much closer to the Finnish I believe, at least I can understand something of their talk or texts.
