I was just checking and saw that Diego had 5 goals and 11 assists in 33 Serie A games for us, and yet we still didn’t consider him a successful signing. Meanwhile, players would be treated like Maradona with those numbers nowadays. I don’t think all of our signings this season combined even contributed to 16 goals.

Scored against Inter, Roma, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Napoli. Wish we had of gave him another season.
He was sacrificed because of Delneri and that ridiculous 4-4-2. Honestly, Marotta’s first year was a disaster — selling Diego, bringing in Delneri, and signings like Marco Motta and Martinez… He really got lucky that his gamble on Conte paid off the next season.

I've never been more excited about a new transfer. Maybe Ronaldo but that felt different.

When we signed Diego the club was in a such a poor state due to Calciopoli and it had been years since we signed anyone half decent. I genuinely thought he was going to help bring us back to our best.
Bayern fans were super butthurt back then :touched:

Just like when we signed Vidal.

Del Neri could never fit him in his 4-4-2 system, same problems at porto when the 2 of them were together there. There were even stories of how Conte wouldn't have been able to fit him into his then 4-2-4 system when we were linked with Conte beforehand.
We basically sold Diego and got Barzagli in return but also helped fund for Krasic for Del Neri's system.

Personally Diego is one of my favourite players of the past decade or so, glad he managed to find success at Flamengo before retiring.

Diego was definitely a galactico signing in a poor era for JJ

Shame the rest of the team was pretty shit

@Alen remember how Diego was our first true Tuz Guru signing?
You had inside info that we were gonna sign him three years before it actually happened. I don't know how you pulled it off, or who your source inside the club was, but it doesn't even matter because in the end you were right.
I still remember how some people here mocked you and thought you were a fraud, but boy did they have to eat their humble pie when Diego signed.
