Rarely has their been so much buzz around a player returning to the Bundesliga. After a lengthy tug-of-war with Italian side Juventus, 2009 champs Wolfsburg succeeded in signing playmaker Diego last week.
The skillful Brazilian was one of the German league's biggest stars when he played for Werder Bremen from 2006 to 2009, scoring 38 goals in 84 matches. So it was hardly surprising that he was inserted directly into the starting line-up for the Wolves' Saturday match against Mainz.
On the pitch, Diego gave Wolfsburg fans and bosses a taste of what they can expect - in both the positive and negative senses.
The Brazilian capped off a good first half by tap-dancing around the Mainz keeper to put the Wolves ahead 3-0. But he virtually disappeared in the second half, except for a laughably crass dive, as Mainz came back to pull a stunning upset.
Wolfsburg probably wished they had kept Diego's predecessor, Zvjezdan Misimovic, on the pitch for one more match. But the Bosnian wizard is being shipped abroad and was left out of the squad.
The events in Wolfsburg on Saturday illustrate the dangers of last-minute signings. While high-profile late arrivals can inspire a squad, convincing it of management's ambitions, they often arrive ill-prepared and require weeks before they are integrated into a team.
Sometimes they don't even get on the pitch.

L'ex juventino lancia frasi pesanti sulla sua vecchia dirigenza: "Delneri mi disse 'fai parte del mio progetto' a maggio e poi dopo il trofeo Tim ed io ero felicissimo, ma guardai Marotta e capii che stava lavorando in un'altra direzione, stava facendo di tutto per vendermi. Marotta aveva deciso di vendermi, lui vuole solo italiani ma questa è una strada sbagliata. La Juventus ha sbagliato campagna acquisti, sono arrivati tanti buoni giocatori ma nessun campione.
Poi altra stoccata contro Marotta che lo ha ceduto per 16 milioni di euro: 'La mia cessione ha provocato un grave danno economico alla società. Se Marotta si fosse comportato in modo diverso con me avremmo gestito insieme la partenza e la Juve avrebbe incassato molti soldi in più. Marotta non sa trattare con i campioni con me e Trezeguet non si è comportato bene".

Juventus reject Diego has attacked director general Beppe Marotta for his transfer dealings over the summer.
Diego was one of numerous players shipped out of the club by the official after Marotta, who arrived from Sampdoria at the end of last term, was asked to rebuild the Old Lady.
Although Diego was seemingly sold for tactical reasons as he didn’t fit in Gigi Del Neri’s 4-4-2 system, he’s told the Gazzetta dello Sport that Marotta and not the Coach is to blame for his exit.
“Del Neri told me that I was a part of the project in May and also after the Trofeo TIM and that made me happy,” he said.
“However, I looked at Marotta and understood that he was working in another direction. He was doing everything possible to sell me.”
Diego was sold last week to Wolfsburg for an initial €15m, just a year after Juve paid Werder Bremen €24m for his services.
“My sale has cost the club financially,” the Brazilian added. “Marotta doesn’t know how to treat champions like myself and David Trezeguet.
“If Marotta had comported himself in a different manner with me then we both could have worked on a move and Juve would have netted more money.”
Not only did Diego criticise Marotta for his own sale, but he also blasted the transfer guru for his overall mercato strategy.
“Marotta decided to sell me because he wants just Italians and that is the wrong road to go down,” he warned.
“Juventus have made a mistake with their signings, a lot of good players have arrived but no champions.”
