I’m a fascist, admits Di Canio
Friday 23 December, 2005

Paolo Di Canio is to appeal against the recent ban and fine handed down to him by the Italian Football Association by arguing in his defence that he is a fascist.

Di Canio claims that the Roman salute that led to his one-match ban and £7,000 fine at the hands of the Italian FA was his way of showing camaraderie towards his Lazio supporters and not any racist slur.

“I am a fascist not a racist,” he said. “I give the Roman salute because it is a greeting from comrade to fellow comrade that is directed towards my people.

“With the raised arm I do not intend to incite violence or even racial hatred,” added the 37-year-old.

The former West Ham and Charlton player chose to make the gesture during his side’s fraught match with Livorno, whose supporters are notoriously left wing.

He has decided to be defended by a lawyer from Bologna, whose father was a renowned fascist criminal lawyer.

Gabriele Bordoni is also a right-wing sympathiser and staunch Biancocelesti fan.

Di Canio’s plight has only served to heighten his legendary status among Lazio’s right-wing fanbase, 500 of whom were staging a sit-in at the Rome headquarters of the Italian FA on Friday.

“I’d like to thank my supporters,” added the controversial Lazio captain. “I would also like to thank my friends who have stood by me during this time and for the solidarity shown for a gesture that for me is just about belonging.

“Merry Christmas and long live liberty,” he concluded.

Paolo Di Canio is adamant he is not a racist, following his controversial straight arm salute.

The experienced striker served a one-game ban in midweek after an incident in Lazio's recent game against Livorno.

Di Canio then repeated his salute in the clash with Juventus and was forced to sit out the match against Lecce.

He was also fined €10,000 (£7,000) for his indiscretion, but Di Canio insists his actions do not make him a racist.

Instead, Di Canio claims his salute is a reference to his support for the fascist movement of former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

"I am fascist, not a racist," Di Canio, who first made the salute in the Rome derby earlier this year, told news agency ANSA.

"I give the straight arm salute because it is a salute from a 'camerata' to 'camerati' (Italian words for members of Mussolini's movement).

"The salute is aimed at my people. With the straight arm I don't want to incite violence and certainly not racial hatred."

I can agree with Di Canio that a ban might not be entirely justifiable: it's a fascist gesture and more important a Roman gesture after all. The first is a political fraction and I somehow doubt you should be punished for agreeing with their ideals. It's not because I find fascism repulsive I should make Di Canio think the same. All in all I don't think the ban is deserved, unless based on the fact signor Di Canio wanted to set the crowd on fire.

Don't know about Di Canio himself but when he says "The salute is aimed at my people" , the Lazio fan base that this salute is addressed are far-right and have openly some extremes view (racist ...)

I still dont see why they dont go after Lucarelli

clearly, he is a Communist, and has admitted so in the past

He also incites crowds with his communist salutes to his fans, and its offensive

if they go after one, better go after them all !!

You're right. But then again many don't realise the the amount of people killed because of this ideal (many millions), they wear their Che t-shirts and think they're cool. They're as revolting as any Facist.

I didn`t know that Di Canio had played for us in the past
I feel ashamed for our club that we had that kind of an asshole
About Lucarelli yes I believe he should be kept in quite since it is football not politics but I find Lucarelli`s actions as not offending since he is just pointing at the left wind kind of things.
Di Canio`s actions however are more than just offending they are in favour of the Nazis and what Hitler was standing for and all the killings that he and his Nazis had caused 6 million Jews not to mention they killed many other people too
so certainly when someone signal the favourism to those kind of things it is offending!!!
