Lazio striker Paolo Di Canio has been banned for one game and fined 10,000 Euros for making a raised-arm salute in a match against Juventus on Saturday.

The former Italy international made the gesture after being substituted in the 1-1 draw against Juventus at the Olympic Stadium.

The 37-year-old also made a fascist salute during the Serie A defeat at Livorno on 11 December.

He will now miss Lazio's trip to Lecce on Wednesday.

Di Canio also made a fascist salute at the end of Lazio's 3-1 win over city rivals AS Roma in January.

On that occasion he was fined 10,000 euros and escaped a ban.

The gestures have been attacked by politicians, players, fans and Jewish groups in Italy.

Sepp Blatter, president of world soccer's governing body Fifa, said players making fascist salutes should be banned from the game for life.

Even Lazio distanced themselves from Di Canio, saying the club rejected any "politicisation" of football.

Di Canio defended the gesture, saying it was not intended as a political statement and that he would continue to acknowledge his fans in whatever way he chooses.

...
I'm in complete sympathy with the public shaming of Di Canio over his imbecilic behavior.

But unfortunately, Sepp Blatter had to open his mouth and, once again, bring the credibility of everyone else behind a legitimate cause into question.

This is the core of Italian football today.
Less attendes then EPL, La liga and Deuchland uber alles. Problems with ultras and extreme opinions. It is a shame...

In the long run they will have to improve drasticly!

If you compare the different leagues you´ll see that the Italian league is slipping behind in every way.

No1: Less attendees then the other big leagues. That will make Serie A less interesting in an international perspective. When the tv-viewers see that a game only has 15000 persons on the stand they automatically think that the game it self has a lower quality than a game with 60000 attendees. So it will affect the trademark.

No2: Violent behavior and controversies on the stands will not make the average customer more interested. On the contrary. Remember WC 2002 when south-Korea played. Great audience!

No3: The quality of the Italian broadcasts are as if there were from The Third world. You can´t even compare the quality of the productions from La Liga and especially EPL! Witch does not make it as enjoying to watch.

No4: The Arenas. Italian Stadiums looks as they are from the 2nd world war. Except some that were build to the WC -90. The commercials in the arenas looks as if the players just thru them out in no order what so ever. I wonder if any one of them even taken one single course in marketing?!

This makes Serie A less attractive in the common viewers eye. And the worst thing is that it seems no one even cares…

Di Canio is a fuckin idiot. Why, Paolo why? You know what kind of sewer-filth your feeding, so why do it?

I dont give a shit if he has a Mussolini tattoo, or has racist sympathies, or whatever. Why bring it into football you fuckwad?

The ban did justice, because he wasnt doing anything that affected the game, either team, or the players when he did what he did, so if they were to punish him, they couldnt hammer him into seventh heaven.

But seriously, what a fuckin idiot.

Why? I don't see why can't punish this hard because he didn't "affect the game". If anything, racist and fascist behaviour should be punished as hard as anything, IMO. There's simply no place for it at all.

That would restrict freedom of speech/expression, no?

So? Players can't express themself as they wish on the field already. If they want to be rascists and fascists they certainly don't need to do it on the football field, in front of fans and kids. It's bad enough if they're doing it off the pitch. They're on the pitch to play, not to express their views on politics and life.

Right, but do you not agree that it will also be difficult to enforce?

"What sign did he make? Was it three fingers? No it was two. But still, the hand was palm down, no? Palm on the side? But it looks more like a 45 degree angle. So it can be both? No, but his elbow is bent a little. Is that medical condition or done on purpose? The player claims he was stretching his arm. But he told me he was adjusting his shirt....Which do you think?"

And then there is the meaning:

"What does that signal mean? I know it is offensive, but in another location it is a sign of good luck. Maybe he didnt know the meaning. What do you mean it can be both meanings? Ok, but in this context it is offensive. No? So what is the context? Yes, but they got a new signal, no? I dont think I have the 1974 gesture handbook. Mine is an old edition. 2003 only. Sorry."

absolutly correct. I am not seeing any improve from this point of view. I think the EPL is the standard now. I mean if Italy was like England why should "Emirates" sponsor a team like Arsenal and not the biggest teams in Italy? they just don´t see any prespective in Italy. The only thing that counts in Italy is "blaming" referees and discussing about right and wrong decisions. this is simply a shame for serie A.
