“I believe in Serie A”

“I have a very definite idea of my role as coach; to bestow on the players a strong sense of responsibility, to forge relationships based on trust, to be there for the players when they need me, to talk to them, both young and old, and to make sure each player knows just how important he is to the team”. A month into the job, Didier Deschamps is relishing his role as head coach of the bianconeri, even if it is still uncertain which division his team will be playing in this season: “It’s obviously a distraction not knowing our point of departure, and therefore being unable to set out specific goals, but I believe in the possibility of playing in Serie A this year. After the latest decision and the fact that the differential treatment of the other clubs has now been taken into consideration, we think, at least we hope, we will be reinstated in Serie A. Either way, let’s wait for the final decision on Friday, then we can talk about football and football alone”. Whatever the outcome of the sentence, Deschamps knows he has Camorenesi and Trezeguet on board for the adventure that lies ahead: “They’re staying, 100%. I’ve spoken to each of them and no one is going anywhere”. And will this be a team in the image of Deschamps the player? “Not at all! I’m looking for that determination and motivation to fulfil the goals we have set out to achieve. The will to win is the basis for any
successful side”. The Frenchman then turned his attention to Friday’s success in the “Birra Moretti” Trophy: “Naples is a fantastic venue for football; the city, the fans and the atmosphere are all wonderful. It was great for the lads to play in a place like that but more importantly, I was pleased with their attitude on the field, their team spirit and their willingness to give their all for the cause”. And tomorrow’s friendly against Piacenza? “Not everyone has had a chance to play together, and it
will take time for everyone to reach the same levels of fitness, but after a month’s training the players are hungry to play competitive matches. They said, the result tomorrow is not the major concern”. Rounding off the morning’s press conference, Deschamps then stressed the importance of having natural leaders in the side: “One leader is not enough, you need at least
three; a physical leader, a technical leader and a spiritual leader. Who? I’m not telling, but together they will carry this group forward”.

Calciopoli discounts on the way? Tuesday 15 August, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The FIGC will take part in the CONI Conciliation meetings with the Calciopoli clubs and newspapers predict further cuts to the original penalties.

Juventus, Fiorentina, Lazio and Milan all saw their handicaps slashed in half by the first appeal, but have staged another legal action with the CONI.

As the start of the season is impending and there is another court left that these sides can appeal to – the Lazio TAR Tribunal – it’s claimed the Federation will negotiate a discount to end the issue now.

Juve are the first to be heard on August 18 and, if the FIGC attempts to offer a deal in order to avoid going to the TAR, then the other three sides can expect similar treatment.

Although it’s highly unlikely the Bianconeri will be allowed back into Serie A, they should have a few more points shaved off their handicap.

The original Calciopoli verdicts ordered them to start the 2006-07 campaign with a 30-point penalty, but that was cut to just 17 on appeal.

Lazio and Fiorentina were demoted, then brought back up to the top flight with an 11 and 19-point penalty respectively.

Milan’s original 15-point handicap was reduced to eight on appeal. They also had a one-match ban on playing at San Siro.

“It’s not true this is a whitewash,” assured a Federation source in the 'Gazzetta dello Sport’. “The scandal has been noted and the sporting justice system must be respected for its verdicts.”

Meanwhile, Messina, Lecce and Brescia have formally been admitted to Juve’s CONI meeting as third parties in the scandal, as they seek a return to Serie A.

Deschmps also believed nobody would leave after Zambro, Canna, Thuram and Emerson were sold. He seriously needs to save the talking for the dressing room. And get on with it.
