Alessandro Del Piero paid tribute to Gianni Agnelli after scoring his first goal at Juventus Stadium. The captain hit a scintillating first-half effort which saw the stadium erupt in delirium and set the Bianconeri on their way to the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Del Piero has a habit of scoring at vital moments, and the ninth anniversary of the much-loved Avvocato’s death proved a perfect occasion to honour the club’s heritage. *
“I think he would have summed it up with one of his legendary quotes,” stated the 37-year-old. “It was a nice goal and I’m happy to have scored it on such a particular day in this club’s history. Not finding the target until today didn’t make me anxious, but I’ve shaken off a slight burden, because both myself and many fans had been waiting for this goal.”*
The striker added: “It was also nice to score because the goal wasn’t just a moment, it came during a good performance, made up of plenty of movement and exchanges with team-mates. I wanted to play well, get through to the next round, and then score a goal.”*
Del Piero concluded by acknowledging the electric atmosphere provided by the Bianconeri faithful: *“Yes, it was nice to play a quarter-final at this stadium. The proximity of the supporters is a great help for us. Personally speaking, I’m happy, but this evening’s test won’t change much as far as I’m concerned. I’ll continue to prepare to my very best, as always, just like my team-mates. We’re all working towards the same objective with great commitment.”
