a real shame, i really thought he was a good player. Just a pity that his depression and injuries prevented him from reaching his potential!

another german retires

The centre-back joined Dinamo Zagreb from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but left the Croatian side earlier this month after sustaining a fresh knee injury.

Germany defender Jens Nowotny has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33.
The centre-back joined Dinamo Zagreb from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but left the Croatian side earlier this month after sustaining a fresh knee injury.

'I have certainly had worse times, but to think that I now may have to wait another 10 months through physiotherapy and returning to training - this is enough,' he told Kicker magazine.

'I actually wanted to end my career here, but three weeks before the winter break, I could feel a strong pain in my knee.

'We have therefore agreed to go separate ways.'

Nowotny is no stranger to knee injuries having torn his cruciate ligament twice in each knee during his distinguished career.

Nowotny played his last game for Germany against Sweden in August after being involved in the squad which ended the World Cup with the bronze medal.

He made a total of 48 international appearances and was still part of coach Joachim Low's plans leading up to Euro 2008.
