One of his best performances for Juve and he still manages to be at fault for the lone goal.

I don't think it's his fault. It must be Mellberg and Chiellini's faults, they must be the one that mark Van Nistelroy.

It was Mellberg's fault, Molinaro shouldn't be marking at that spot.

JuveRed's right. When a ball is crossed, no one is supposed to be "marking space," and man to man marking must be taken up. No matter what defensive system is being played.

Grygera was pressuring the crosser, Mellberg and Chiellini were marking Raul and Van der Vaart. Molinaro was, of course, now running to meet Ruud.

However, he played decent enough today.

It doesn't matter who Mellberg was marking. if the ball was crossed from the left (our right) and RVN is making a run from the right (our left). Must Mellberg run across Chiellini and take his eye of the ball and the players in front of him to go for Ruud? in this case, the play was drawn to our right wing, and the defence had to shift across. RVN was the player closest to the far post anyway, and so was Molinaro. Molinaro was unoccupied, Mellberg was not, Ruud was unmarked. Do the math.

I think Higuain wasn't playing when they scored the goal. He was replaced by Robben IIRC.
When they scored the goal Real had 2 CFs and Mellberg+Chiellini should have taken care of them.
Molinaro was marking his man (in this case Ramos).

Also, if Molinaro went for the strikers and left Ramos unmarked....imagine if the ball was deflected to Ramos. He would've been left alone and we'd have blamed Molinaro again.
The CBs should have taken care of RVN, not Molinaro.
The problem is vdV in this case. Our midfielders left him alone in our box and Chiellini had to mark him.

Chiellini was marking RVN but then vdV came from behind and Giorgio decided to mark vdV instead of RVN. It all happened in less than 1 sec.
Molinaro was marking his guy and he didn't have time to catch RVN.

Real had 4 of their players inside our box and we had 3 defenders to mark them. One of them was certainly going to be unmarked. Maybe Sissoko could have done better and he should have went after vdV instead of Giorgio doing that, but, like i said, everything happened very fast.

It was more of a collective defensive failure rather than there being a major mistake by any individual.

The defence was really outnumbered and so a midfielder was needed somewhere to help out in the box.

My goodness, this is getting ridiculously stupid, Molinaro has no strong qualities. Fine, he's fast, I'll give him that, and I was impressed the first time I saw him; (which is why I never really got onto the Molinaro bashing bandwagon initially). So how has that helped us? Can he mark and defend properly? No. Can he pass? No. Can he cross? No.

Name me one good move he's done for us?

He made one interception in Juve-Napoli 1-0 which led to Iaquinta's cool finish last year.

But more often than not, he has been consistently SUB-PAR. He'll be great with Cagliari, Lecce, Empoli.

ENOUGH! And Ranieri has lost so much credibility in my books, for insisting on Molinaro in the starting 11!!!!

I'm being slightly harsh on Molinaro for the goal: it was only partially his fault.

Our left midfielder (Salihamidzic?) needed to track Ramos. He didn't and so Molinaro was stuck trying to mark two players at the back post.

its shared imo, but the fact that brazzo didn't have set position didn't help either with the defensive structure.

imo chiellini should've been more attentive to RVN as he just drifted forward without actually marking anyone.

also about molinaro, very good defensive game from him and thats as much as we will get. If memory serves me, he had good defensive games against Inter last and maybe roma(contained maicon and mancini if am not mistaken). For me that is good enough against the big teams at different time but against the smaller ones it should be different.

He's doing ok when he has defensive duties only. He saves the energy and he doesn't leave a lot of space at the back.
But when we play against smaller teams and he has to attack and defend, then we have a problem.

The easiest thing to do would be rotating both, but CR will need to define when either of them can play based on the opponent. The complication rises when we play a small team that could cause problems on the wing, that's where he will earn his money.

Exactly. The kid is not good enough for Juventus, but do you think that he wants to be that kind of player? Yesterday, when the speaker was calling the formation by saying the first name and the tifosi had to say the last name, a bunch of 'fans' yelled 'merda' in stead of 'Molinaro'. That's just very sad. Those guys should big him up, you don't tear up one of your own players. The guy played a fair game yesterday.
