Category: Match Reports

With a sound 4-1 over Fiorentina in the second-leg match (after the 2-2 earned in the first leg), Juventus qualify to Coppa Italia quarter-finals.

It’s Del Piero’s night, now the King of goals. A hat trick by the Captain against that very Fiorentina which evokes him the unforgettable memory of that goal scored back in 1994 which he reckons being one of his favourites and that marked the beginning of years of glory and triumph. 9 minutes into the first half, Alessandro Del Piero scores his 183th goal with the Juventus jersey which means becoming the most prolific Juventus striker of all time: Balzaretti crosses from the left, Mutu passes with a header to Del Piero who controls the ball in the penalty area, turns around and beats Frey with a left-footed drive. It’s a moment of joy and celebration, it’s the Captain going down in history and he celebrates with his teammates while supporters give him a big round of applause and cheer him. Alex is relentless and eight minutes later, on 17’ minutes, he scores the second strike, this time with one of his aces, a magnificent free kick from the edge of the box.

Alex is amazing and so are Juventus who wipe Fiorentina out in few minutes’ time during the second-leg of Coppa Italia’s last 16 round. The third goal arrives after 21 minutes, scored by Mutu who takes advantage of a bounce of the ball hit by Del Piero and kicks it in. Few other thrills are felt in the first half, with Fiorentina attempting on goal with Bojinov’s free kick which ends out, while Zalayeta threats Frey’s goal with a right-footed shot from the edge of the box.

The second half starts with no substitutions made on Juventus’s side, while Fiorentina replace Pazzini and Brivio with Toni and Pasqual. The Captain is still overwhelming and he threats Frey with a volley in the very first minutes and on 6’ minutes when he follows Mutu’s cross pass with a header. And there it comes the hat trick, on 12 minutes, on penalty (4-0). The visitors make the last substitution, Brocchi in place of Montolivo. On 19’ minutes, Bojinov scores for the Viola with a header, following Pasqual’s free kick (4-1). Capello’s side successfully manage their advantage and attempt again on goal on 37’ minutes with Zalayeta, who is anticipated by Frey. In the final minutes of the game, the Bianconeri coach replaces Zalayeta and Balzaretti with Olivera and Gladstone. Juventus get through to Coppa Italia quarter-finals.
