Antonio Conte is under no illusions regarding the significance of tomorrow’s Coppa Italia semi-final second leg encounter against Milan. The manager appreciates the domestic competition could represent the club’s first trophy win under his stewardship and insists his side will fight tooth and nail to secure a place in May’s final.

The 42-year-old began: “It’s a competition that has a great value for us, given that in Italy you can only win the Scudetto or the Coppa Italia. We’re experiencing an exciting pre-match build-up and I’m happy that the youngest players in my squad are part of this. It’s good that they can get used to this, because they should have many similar moments in the future. Now we’ll think about tomorrow’s game, which could give us the possibility of lifting a trophy and is therefore the most important game for now. I hope that there are others in future.”

The importance of the encounter will see Conte call on the most experienced member of his squad to spearhead the Bianconeri attack. Alessandro Del Piero has mainly figured from the bench this season, but the manager believes that tomorrow’s game will provide the talismanic skipper with the perfect opportunity to shine.

“I said at my very first press conference that Del Piero and Buffon would always be reference points. They’ve confirmed this throughout the entire season and are continuing to do so. It’s right that Del Piero figures and I’m expecting great personality, great experience and great desire. I’m convinced that it will be Del Piero’s game.”

Conte sought to confirm that Marco Storari will continue between the posts - having started in all of Juve’s Coppa Italia fixtures this season – before electing to pay tribute to understudy Alex Manninger.

“Storari will play, because he is a hugely reliable goalkeeper, whilst Manninger will be on the bench. He is another player who I’ll never stop thanking. He’s one who hasn’t featured and hasn’t enjoyed much satisfaction from a playing point of view, but I consider both him and Marco to be fundamental elements of the dressing room.”

The topic of conversation then moved on from individuals to potential tactics deployed to combat Allegri’s in-form side. Conte’s preferred systems have been 4-3-3 and 3-5-2, but the manager refutes the notion that there is little room for flexibility.

“We have two ways of playing which have been taken on board by the players, so there’s also the possibility of changing system during the game itself. The most important thing, as I’ve always said, is the attitude and mentality – the system comes second.”

With ten championship games remaining, Conte is aware that the Bianconeri can also keep up the pressure on Milan in the hunt for the title. Last Saturday’s 5-0 demolition of Fiorentina saw his side rediscover their goalscoring touch and give themselves hope ahead of the final run-in.

“At this point of the season it’s important to give our maximum and then see where it takes us. I’ve always told my players to give our all and the important thing is to finish the season without regrets. If we don’t have regrets, it means that we’ve all given our all.”
