Antonio Conte sought to emphasise the importance of Saturday’s clash against Fiorentina during his pre-match meeting with the media in Vinovo. The historic rivalry between the two sides is just an added spice to what promises to be an intriguing contest at the Artemio Franchi. Juventus will go all out for the win in order to keep up the pressure on Milan, while the hosts are in need of points to climb into the top half of the table.

The press conference, however, began by considering other issues, in particular the decision to assign the game to referee Mauro Bergonzi.

“Bergonzi is a good official,” stated Conte. “However, it’s a very odd decision in the light of what happened a few days ago, and also considering the importance of the game for us and for Fiorentina. We’re chasing a dream, while our opponents find themselves in the lower echelons of the table. It’s the biggest match of the year as far as they’re concerned. Was it the most appropriate decision? We’ll know the answer after the game.”

The 42-year-old then reflected on the Bianconeri’s last encounter against Genoa, in which his side produced a strong attacking display and went agonisingly close to snatching a winner through Vucinic and Pepe.

And whilst the manager expressed regret at failing to prise three points away from the Luigi Ferraris, he remained philosophical when considering the giant strides made under his stewardship so far.

“It’s a shame that we didn’t win the game in Genova,” he continued. “We created a lot but we didn’t manage put our chances away. However, as I’ve always said, it all forms part of a process of development which began just six and a half months ago. Occasionally people forget that. We’re having an extraordinary championship season and making the media speak about us as Milan’s rivals.”

While Saturday’s encounter is expected to come too soon for Andrea Barzagli, his defensive colleague Giorgio Chiellini is edging closer to a return to full fitness. Conte, however, insisted he is not prepared to take any risks as far as the defender’s condition is concerned.

“We’ve got today and tomorrow to make our decision,” he said. “It’s inevitable that I’ll speak to the player and he needs to give me guarantees, also because the championship doesn’t end tomorrow and I want to be certain that he’s fully recovered.”

Conte concluded by commenting on his frequent rotation of the Bianconeri frontline. Borriello, Del Piero, Matri, Quagliarella and Vucinic have all had spells in the starting line-up, providing the side with a healthy element of competition.

“We don’t have a fixed striker,” he affirmed. “Instead, we have players who look to make it a difficult decision for me. I’m not concerned. I would be if we didn’t shoot on goal or look to dictate the play.”
