Cobolli Gigli: “Transfer dealings over”
“The transfer window is closed and that’s us done until June”. With these words, chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli - quoted by ANSA on a visit to Catanzaro - summed up the Bianconeri’s January transfer activities. The market closed today at 19.00.
Didier Deschamps will not have any new players for the second phase of the season. Better to keep faith in the group which has excelled thus far, recovering the nine point handicap and closing the opening phase of the season in top spot. The loan move of Guzman has been the only transfer activity to involve the senior squad.
But the Bianconeri directors have worked hard (and well) over the month of January, looking ahead to the 2007/08 season which gets under way in July. The signatures of Hasan Salihamidzic (the Bosnian midfielder whose contract with Bayern Munich is due to expire in the summer) and Mimmo Criscito (the talented young defender who will return home from a spell with Genoa) have been confirmed. Not to forget the huge steps forward made in the attempt to bring Ajax’s Czech defender, Zdenek Grygera, to Turin.
Giovanni Cobolli Gigli had this to say about the new arrivals: “The Criscito agreement follows the strategy mapped out by Juventus. However, in line with the constraints set in place by the financial consequences of relegation, the club is trying to work towards tactically reinforcing the squad with the signing of football players of proven quality who will strengthen the midfield, the defence and, in the future, the attack as well. Come June we will begin to have a strengthened squad which I hope will also include the champions we have with us now”.
The chairman then spoke about the futures of the existing players: “It’s quite possible not a single player will leave, but as I’ve said before, it’s too early to talk about any of this in detail. We will begin discussions when we know we have a high probability of returning to Serie A and right now, there are too many games left to play. Only then will we directly address the possible future of the club with the players themselves”.
