Here is a very interesting article about Serie A coaches next season:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the past little while there has been much speculation about teams’ futures and which players will come and go. However, let us focus on the other aspect about what constitutes a team: coaches. Many rumors circulate, but this article focuses on the probable scenarios on 'what ifs’ that could occur. You may or not like it, but I leave it up to the reader to fill in the blanks and come up with your own ideas.
Let’s begin with Capello. Many teams want him and he has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, Manchester United and also the England bench. He is a great coach and he has shown it again at Juventus. Moreover, give him the team and the atmosphere and the trophies will come. Of course he came to Juve to win in Europe, but back-to-back Scudetti could appease the man and he could leave for other pastures. It all depends of the triad : of Moggi, Bettega and Giruado. If they leave, Fabio goes.
However, the triad has signed to remain at Juve, so too the Don. On the other hand, if the price is right and if he gets what he wants, expect him in Spain or England next season. Juve will not go into a bidding war with him and they will look at other probable replacements: Who can they be? Well, Lippi if he does not renew his contract, Prandelli (sources state that he renewed but he is open to offers), Deschamps (experience is still needed), Guidolin (a good coach), Del Nieri (a long shot, but if they are desperate), and Zaccheroni (another long shot, but he is a capable coach). Juve have choices, but if Capello leaves, expect Prandelli to take his place as his demands are not so stringent.
Ancelotti: Well, he coaches for Milan. There was speculation that he would leave and possibly coach Real Madrid. He just signed a contract extension till 2008. He is a good coach, but he has had bad luck over the years. Also, if he does not deliver the goods, expect Silvio to look for a replacement. So if Carlo does resign or in the event attains a pink slip, who would take over Milan? There are many probable candidates but they have a policy of sticking with past players. Therefore, Donadoni is a near perfect candidate. He resigned from Livorno after a row with the owner. He is unemployed, hence is not tied to anyone and he has shown he has a knack for the game. Yes he is more defensive than Ancelotti and cannot handle criticism well (he will get a lot of it at Milan and phone calls from Silvio and if he cannot take it…
and he will ask for more defensive oriented players, but he can do well here. Another would be Van Basten. He coaches for Holland and he has done well so far, but there are many who believe that he would love to coach a club. Milan can open the doors for him. It is a gamble, but if he coaches Holland well, he could do well at Milan. It all depends on what the organization wants. Shock and awe vs. consistency and discipline. (Who will coach Holland then? I leave that to the boys at the Dutch division). Both coaches are inexperienced per se, and it would be safe to say that Carlo remains at Milan for one more year.
Mancini: There are reports in the media that Moratti is unhappy at the current situation and wants another shake-up. Yes, another. To be fair, Mancini has done a good job and they are playing better than in recent years and they are more offensive, so why change again when the team is still in contention for two trophies? Well, frustration is one explanation. Inter have been bridesmaids for so long that they will do anything to win and often it involves rash decisions. So if Mancini goes, who comes to Inter? There have been rumors that Inter are interested in the Iberian connection: Mourhino and Benitez. If Jose goes expect Erickson to take his place, but the probability of the Chelsea boss leaving to coach a team that has fired so many coaches does not make any sense. Yes, Inter have money and will give him the money, but he has it at Chelsea. Moreover, he is loved there. He is defensive in tactics and he would fit well in Italian soccer, but the risks are too high. He is a high flying coach and if he fails at Inter his reputation will be tarnished. Yes, a lot of coaches have failed here, but Jose has made a lot of enemies and he would just give fuel to the fire. Cruyff would have a field day.
Benitez is also wanted. After all he beat Milan last year and he won two Primera’s and a UEFA Cup with Valencia. True, but his playing style was like that of his predecessor, Cuper - and his team has nearly the same scoring ratio. He is also a defensive coach. Also he likes to leave when he does not get his way. Look how he dumped Valencia. He may just do that with Liverpool. When matters go his way it is all good. However, when his teams suffer setbacks he baulks, like in 2003 when he blamed Italian teams for being too defensive and for ruining soccer. Well, are his teams any different? Liverpool have suddenly hit a goal bonanza of 18 in four games but that is in sharp contrast to what had gone before when the Reds were finding scoring almost beyond them. Yes, they have had injured players, but his tactical set-up does not generally allow for too much open football. He had a row with Valencia and he left. He is also asking for money. Inter will give it, but does money create a team? The answer is, yes and no. If you compare Chelsea: yes; Inter: no. In short to hire Rafa is a risk and Mancini should be given a chance. As for other options, I leave that for you to decide. Who would coach Liverpool then? Well I leave that for the English division writers and for you again to decide.
Lippi is the national coach of Italy. He has done well so far but he has not signed an extension. Also his departure will depend on what they will do in Germany. However, if he leaves who could take over? Well Capello could. Ancelotti is a second candidate, as a foreigner could be considered in Eriksson, one of the few foreign coaches to win in Italy, and he has been linked with a move to Inter. He is the perfect candidate for both teams as he has plenty of experience and he can handle the pressure. Also he knows the players well and he complements Mancini’s style (Now that could be a hindrance too). As for the national team to get a coach that has already coached a big squad with plenty of skill would be a coup d’etat and Italy’s future could be secure. Scolari could also join, but I do not see him coaching another European squad. Lippi could do to Manchester United, Real Madrid or return to Juve. Scolari after the World Cup will probably return to Brazil.
