I don't think Conte ever said that he uses a 4-2-4 system. He said a few times that it is still the classic formation but with a few differences. Others came up with this comprasion.

he started CM next to melo, did it so bad he was replaced by aquilani for the entire season.

Because pepe failed on the left, and martinez was injured, he had the chance on the right and didnt do much really.

He never showed anything close to the grid and determination he talked about in the papers. on the field, he dissapeared.
