Interesting stuff from the "invisible man"

Q: After returning to Juve from Empoli, you became a central midfielder who tries to stop the opposition in possession, but you’ve played in other positions too..

CM: “It’s not easy to play a match centrally and then another match on the wing. But if you want to play, a footballer must know how to adapt according to the Coach’s requests. Yes, I have played on the left of a three-man midfield, on the left flank in a 4-4-2 and also centrally in the same formation..”

Q: An advice?
CM: ”I’ve learnt that in whatever position the Coach plays me in, I have to make myself important for the team, even if it risks my own play. There’s no saying, 'I feel out of position and I will just do my homework here.’ No, you should try to affect the game yourself, putting the opposition in difficulty, creating favourable situations for my teammates.”

Q: Let’s talk about 4-4-2, at San Siro against Inter and in other games you played on the left wing.
CM: “Considering the distinctly attacking characteristics of Milos Krasic, our formation is a masked 4-3-3 in this situation. And I often move centrally to find my natural position. At San Siro, following the instructions from Delneri, when we were out of possession, I had to prevent the situations where Maicon pushes up without having to deal with anyone trying to stop him. When we had the ball instead, I had to either try to score from distance or look for a through ball to enter the last 16 metres.”

Q: Is it difficult to interpret different positions?
CM: “Yes, because they change the movements you make. The way you should run, the situations, everything is different. You have to recognise and interpret them immediately. Also, I don’t have the qualities of a winger, like dribbling past, beating the defender and crossing. But like I said before, I just try to do what is important and necessary for the team.”
