what was he referring to?
Roma Ladrona is generally used to indicate that a lot of money (= taxes) goes to Rome (= the Italian state), but that it never comes back. It's a poor choice of words if he really said it, but the guy was only joking if he did. Besides I couldn't tell if he really did sing it anyway.

Unfortunately not a very good one then, as it goes like this:

Roma Ladrona, La Lega Non Perdona :D.

I think that if he really did say it, it was only a joke though and I doubt that he meant anything with it. It probably wasn't smart, but come on, why they're trying to destroy their only hope of doing something in South Africa is a mystery to me.

he admitted he said it, and said it was a mistake and he repeated something twice and confused himself. Only the media is making a fuss about it, as all his team mates on the bench burst out laughing, even Lippi said that there is 'no scandal'

"la precisazione di marchisio — "Nessuna frase offensiva, semplicemente ero fuori tempo con la banda, e il mio labiale può essere sembrato non in sintonia con l'inno". Così Claudio Marchisio, con una precisazione affidata al suo procuratore, Claudio Pallavicino, interviene sulle polemiche legate al video che lo ritrae mentre canta l'inno nazionale prima dell'amichevole con la Svizzera di ieri sera."

So he says he didn't say it.

Canna: 'Italy a ridiculous country'

Sunday 6 June, 2010

Fabio Cannavaro is disillusioned by the media furore over Claudio Marchisio’s anthem. “This is a ridiculous country.”

Politicians, newspapers and fans called for Marchisio to be dropped from the World Cup squad after video suggested he sang “Roma ladrona” – Rome the thief – during the national anthem.

Cannavaro was one of the players around him who turned and laughed after the incident, which he claimed was down to tripping up over the words.

“What simply happened was that during the anthem we were getting our timing wrong,” Cannavaro told ANSA news agency.

“We were all losing our place, Marchisio in particular, between the sound of the band and the different tempo of the crowd’s singing.

“Because of that, and only because of that, we started laughing. The truth is that this is a ridiculous country.”

The Azzurri captain was also angry with Minister Roberto Calderoli, who suggested the squad forego its World Cup bonus during the economic crisis.

“No comment. I will only repeat that this is truly a ridiculous country.”

... and you're a wonderful captain, Fabio.
