Emotional Capello Hails Monumental Victory
3/9/2005 11:57:00 PM
Juventus boss Fabio Capello was seen rejoicing as never seen before following his team’s monumental win over Real Madrid, on Wednesday.
“I think it’s the first time I celebrated like that in my career. I hope to repeat it again,” he said immediately after the game.

”Beating Real Madrid isn’t simple, especially after losing the first leg. It was important we were able to avoid the penalty kick shoot-out,” he added, before analysing the game.

“We only handed Real one true chance throughout the match. We instead created a lot, but we remained concentrated as well, because if you lose concentration for one second, they punish you,” he said.

Capello also hailed Italian football, that could find itself with three teams in the quarterfinals if Inter get past Porto next week.

“The story that Italian football is defensive must end. Juve, Milan, and Inter all play great football now,” he said.

Juve Win Battle Of The Giants
3/10/2005 12:10:00 AM
The Bianconeri repeated the performance produced against Real Madrid two years ago to beat the Galacticos 2-0 after extra time and qualify dramatically to the quarter finals.
Marcelo Zalayeta succeeded in doing something no one has ever done before: unite the Barcelona and Real Madrid fans. The Uruguay striker must really hate Spanish teams as up till tonight’s match, he was remembered in Spain as the player who eliminated Barcelona from the Champions League two years ago in extra time. Same fate for Real Madrid who will now be joining their rivals in the hate chorus directed towards Zalayeta as the Juve player scored the winner which eliminated Luxemburgo’s side from Europe’s top competition.

In a very tense match, the Bianconeri tried to take the game into their hands and missed many good chances early in the first half through Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Emerson and Camoranesi. Real tried to control the play and used the counter attack weapon quite effectively, even though Buffon did not have to make any saves throughout the whole half.

With the passing of the minutes, the Juventus’ attacks became less frequent and the Merengues started to successfully slow the rhythm of the match down and decrease the offensive strength of the home team.

Nothing seemed to change at the start of the second half and it was Real Madrid who went close to take the lead when Ronaldo’s only decent effort of the night was parried towards the post by Buffon. Capello then opted to send on the pitch Juve’s only real finisher: David Trezeguet. With the Frenchman, the Bianconeri immediately seemed more dangerous offensively and in the 75th minute the home crowd finally celebrated. Mauro German Camoranesi (best player on the field) crossed deep in the penalty area, where Ibrahimovic headed the ball back for Trezeguet who managed to score with an acrobatic half-volley.

A few minutes before, Zinedine Zidane was substituted by Guti, and the midfielder’s exit from the pitch was greeted with a respectful applause by the Bianconeri fans for Zizou’s past 5 year experience in Turin.

The match headed towards extra time where the match became livelier despite the fact that the players on the pitch were extremely tired. The tension on the pitch was extremely high and after much bickering and fighting, Tacchinardi and Ronaldo were both shown the red card for reciprocate fouls in the 113rd minute.

Just when the ghost of the penalty shoot-out was materializing, the Delle Alpi of Turin erupted like it had done 2 years before when on a similar night the Bianconeri defeated the Galacticos 3-1 to qualify for the final. Back then the hero was Pavel Nedved, this time it was Marcelo Zalayeta, Spain’s number one hate figure, who shot past Casillas from the edge of the penalty area after Real’s defence failed to clear the ball away from the danger zone, to seal the win and qualification three minutes from the final whistle.

Juventus fought bravely for the last minutes to hold on to a 2-0 win and qualify to the next round of the Champions League in what will be remembered as another memorable battle against the Spanish giants.

This is the first time that Real Madrid have been eliminated before the quarter final stage since the start of the Champions League, but it’s also the third consecutive time in the past ten years that Juve eliminated the Galacticos.

Juve "galactica", Real adios

E piacciono i supplementari.

Juventus to quarter-finals!

An extraordinary Juventus achieved a great goal right in front of their supporters. They turned the defeat at the Bernabeu over and qualifies to Champions’ League quarter finals. Qualification was achieved in the extra time after the full time had ended 1-0 by Trezeguet’s goal on 30’ minutes into the second half. The winning goal that beated Real Madrid was scored on 11’ minutes of the second half of extra time by Zalayeta: he’s not new to such performances as he scored the qualifying goal two years ago, again in extra-time and again against a Spanish club, Barcelona.

The Delle Alpi tonight is a display of colours, supporters amd football. Juventus and Real Madrid meet in an emotional and struggled match, exciting the fully crowded stadium. Capello’s side kicks-off attacking, Zalayeta serving Ibrahimovic into the box, the Swede attempts on goal but Casillas saves (6’). 5 minutes later and Ronaldo tries to score from the distance but his drive ends over the goalline. The same happens to Camoranesi’s fine right-footed shot, slightly past the post (14’). On 19’ minutes, Del Piero attempts on goal from outside the box and Casillas clears and deflects the ball out for a corner. Following the corner played by Bianconeri’s captain, Ibrahimovic’s header is high over the crossbar. On 23’ minutes, Zidane dribbles his opponents and shoots from outside the box but he misses the target. After 25 minutes, Camoranesi assists Zalayeta, whose volley shot is high over the net. After 30 minutes, the game’s pace slows down, while it rises again in the last few minutes into the first half. On 35’ minutes, Figo’s powerful drive ends beyond the goalline, while in two other occasions Thuram and Cannavaro skillfully anticipate Merengues’ strikers. A dangerous occasion on 40’ minutes for the home side: a counterattack from Real, with a pass to Ronaldo whose finish fortunately misses Buffon’s goal. On 41’ minutes, it’s Ibrahimovic turn to miss the target from the long distance, while a fine pass on the left flank between Pessotto and Zambrotta is finally vain.

No change for both sides during the break. A few minutes into the second half, a free kick by Del Piero is cleared by Casillas while on the other side Ronaldo gets dangerous on a counter-attack, he shoots across the face of goal and the ball ends out. On 9’ minutes, a long exchange of passes for Real is ended by Zalayeta’s drive cleared by Casillas. After 11 minutes, the first change of the match: Del Piero is substituted with Trezeguet. On 16’ minutes, Ibrahimovic’s free kick is out. Juventus is back into attack with Camoranesi, whose finish is deflected out for a corner, followed by Zalayeta’s header, slightly out. Figo breaks Juventus’s pressure with his drive, then easily saved by Buffon (20’). Juventus is back in attack again, with a long series of exchanges that finishes with Ibrahimovic’s shot flashes high over the bar. One more substitution for the Bianconeri: Pessotto is out for Tacchinari, who, on 27’ minutes, served by Zalayeta, attempts on goal, in vain. Real Madrid substitutes Zidane with Guti. The very good second half for the Bianconeri takes shape in the deserved goal scored on 30’ minutes: Camoranesi crosses onto the left flank for Ibrahimovic who heads the ball back to Trezeguet and he volleys the ball left-footed over his right shoulder and scores (1-0). The Delle Alpi celebrates. Capello’s squad continues attacking, being much careful of the dangerous counter-attacks from Real. On 39’ minutes, Roberto Carlos kicks one of his tricky free-kicks but Buffon clears. On 42’ Ibrahimovic assists Camoranesi, whose header ends out. On 44’ minutes, Trezeguet serves the Swede but the shot is high over the bar. It’s the last action into the full time. And it’s extra time.

The first to attempt on goal is Zalayeta who, served by Camoranesi, shoots past the post. Meanwhile, Real, after replacing Beckham with Solari during the full-time, makes the third substitution, with Raul out for Owen. On 9’ minutes, Camoranesi’s powerful drive is wide of target. On 12’ minutes it’s still the Italian-Argentine on a free kick that finishes high over the bar. The first half of the extra time ends goalless. The second half starts with Juventus attacking with Trezeguet, served by Ibrahimovic, but the Frenchman is anticipated. The match gets nervous and after 7 minutes it’s Tacchinardi and Ronaldo who pay the price for that, and both get red cards for mutual fouls. On 10’ minutes, Figo’s free kick is out. Juventus doesn’t give up and gets on target. The goal which qualifies Capello’s squad to quarter finals is scored by Zalayeta with a low drive from the edge of the box that beats Casillas. The Uruguayan celebrates with his team mates the much deserved goal. The match ends with Delle Alpi celebrating and Juventus continuing their race in Champions’ League.

Zalayeta settles titanic tussle Wednesday, 9 March 2005

By Graham Hunter at Stadio Delle Alpi

Marcelo Zalayeta's goal four minutes from the end of extra time enabled Juventus FC to defeat Real Madrid CF 2-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate and ensured there will be no Spanish involvement in the draw for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
First shoot-out
After second-half substitute David Trezeguet wiped out Madrid's first-leg advantage, the match appeared to be heading towards the first shoot-out since the 2003 final - which Juve lost - and the first-ever in the knockout rounds. However, Juve called on all their knowledge and passion from years of European adventures to keep their nerve and win the tie through Zalayeta minutes after Ronaldo and Alessio Tacchinardi were shown direct red cards for an off-the-ball exchange.
Nedved out
As expected, Fabio Capello chose not risk Pavel Nedved whose concussion from the first game had meant exclusion from training until two days ago. The sides were otherwise as expected, both in personnel and formations. And Juve's choice to play with three strikers, Alessandro Del Piero alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcelo Zalayeta, not only indicated the need to get back into tie but also Capello's belief that Madrid were vulnerable under pressure.
Creating havoc
Indeed, Juve started the match in whirlwind style with Ibrahimovic creating havoc in the Madrid penalty box within the first three minutes and almost scoring in the sixth. The Swede drifted in behind Roberto Carlos and Walter Samuel and latched on to a lofted pass from Zalayeta before drilling a shot into the chest of goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Ronaldo sent Madrid's first chance over the bar in the eleventh minute before Mauro Camoranesi fizzed an effort wide from a similar position in the 14th.
Exceptional defending
Del Piero then went close to his 37th Champions League goal in black and white as he unleashed a shot which appeared to bounce awkwardly in front of Casillas and the ball deflecting off the Spain No1 for a corner. The half was typified by two exceptional moments of defending: Iván Helguera denying Ibrahimovic and Fabio Cannavaro getting his head to a David Beckham cross to frustrate Ronaldo.
Burst forward
Madrid's best chance of the first half came in the 40th minute when Raúl Bravo's header found the feet of Luís Figo who in turn curled a pass to Ronaldo. The Brazilian burst forward and cut inside Lilian Thuram before bending a shot just a few centimetres past Gianluca Buffon's right-hand post. As the second half burst into life, it was Ronaldo again who looked the likely first scorer, forcing Buffon to touch his shot on to a post and behind after outstripping Cannavaro.
Trezeguet on
Trezeguet, recovered from flu, came on for Del Piero in the 57th minute and soon galvanised the Bianconeri; although Camoranesi, Gianluca Pessotto and Ibrahimovic all missed the target with Casillas exposed. With the home side 15 minutes from elimination, Camoranesi sent in a deep cross from the right which Ibrahimovic rose to head back into the path of Trezeguet who was able to swivel and volley the ball over his head and not even Casillas's lightning reactions could prevent the ball from bulging the net.
Flurry of chances
The match ended in a flurry of chances, with Ronaldo seeing a goal chalked off for offside and Roberto Carlos bringing an awkward save from Buffon with a trademark swerving free-kick from range. Extra time was no duller with an overhead Zalayeta effort narrowly avoiding the post in the first half, and Ronaldo and Tacchinardi earning the wrath of referee Markus Merk in the second. Zalayeta, though, provided a more fitting conclusion as he drilled in a low shot in the 116th minute to end Madrid's hopes for the second time in three years.
Juventus in dramatic win over Real

Juventus prevailed over Real Madrid in a dramatic second leg at the Delle Alpi stadium in Turin, Uruguayan Marcelo Zalayeta scoring deep into injury time just as the match looked set for penalties. David Trezeguet had forced the extra period with a fabulous 75th-minute volley.

REAL ORGANISED BUT TOOTHLESS
Wanderley Luxemburgo has worked wonders on a disfunctional Real Madrid side in the short time that he has been at the Santiago Bernabeu but, for all their slick passing and organisation, Real simply lacked the killer touch in front of goal that would have put the tie beyond Juventus.
The newly disciplined Galacticos, with the hardworking Gravesen to the fore, controlled large periods of the game, passing the ball fluently in the midfield, but never really threatened to put the tie beyond Juventus.

As early as the 6th minute, Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic showed the defensive deficiencies for which Real have become know in recent seasons, latching onto a through ball and smacking a right-footed volley straight at Casillas from close-range.
In fact, it was a pattern that was to be followed for most of the evening - Real working the ball up the field, only for Juventus to break at speed and create a goalscoring chance.
Camoranesi was a constant source of creativity for the Italian club, and it was from his cross in the 25th minute that Zalayeta spun and blasted a volley over the crossbar.
Madrid too often looked to the undoubted talents of their Brazilian striker Ronaldo to create something from nothing. He very nearly did just that either side of half-time.
SUPER SUB TREZEGUET
The goal, when it came, was worthy of taking the game into extra-time.
Once again, it was Camoranesi who delivered the cross from the right, Zlatan Ibrahimovic rose at the far post and knocked the ball down for Trezeguet on the edge of the six-yard box.
The France international, who had only come on minutes earlier, managed to hit a left-footed shot over his right shoulder which flashed past the despairing Iker Casillas and into the roof of the net.
Real briefly roused themselves and Roberto Carlos tested Buffon with a long range free-kick that swung viciously in the air, and which the keeper could only parry one-handed and divert for a corner.
From the ensuing corner Ronaldo even had the ball in the back of the net, turning a far post cross under Buffon, but the Brazilian was well offside as the cross was floated in.
THE TENSION MOUNTS..
Instead, the game moved into extra-time and Raul, who had only declared himelf fit shortly before the match after a bout of flu, made way for the fresh legs of Michael Owen.
In a strangely lacklustre overtime, Figo came closest to breaking the deadlock with a free-kick that flew just wide of the target with Buffon rooted to the spot.
In fact, the period was more remarkable for the expulsion of both Ronaldo and Tacchinardi in an off-the-ball incident spotted by the linesman.
ZALAYETA SENDS REAL PACKING
Then, just as Real were coming to terms with facing a penalty shootout without their top marksman, Camoranesi delivered yet another cross from the right and Raul Bravo could only clear the ball as far as Zalayeta on the edge of the area.
The Uruguay striker hit a low first-time drive into the bottom left-hand corner to send the bianconeri fans into raptures.
Combined with Barcelona's defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday night, the result in Turin meant that, for the first time in 15 years, no Spanish club has made it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

I knew it I told all my friends that we will eliminate Real but all of them were like yeah right Real would get the win bla bla bla...
Now the only team I don`t want to face is Chelsea all the others are welcomed

Ok why did the ref give Real a foul kick in that position. The ball wasn't there. This was an incident where the ref gives the red card and the game continues from where it was..
I was shocked that this happenned.

And if you noticed, the ref gave tacchi a second yellow NOT a straight red... hmm strange. I didn't see what tacchi did but if he did what you are suggesting then it should've been a straight red. Something is not right. The whole situation is not right.

According to the match report in UEFA.com Tacchi was given a straight red not a second yellow

Ya he was really bad ...especially when he stopped the match to give ronaldo and tachi red cards...he shouldve let the match continue and when the play stops, he gives them red cards....but i guess he stopped cuz the assistant raised the flag...even then he shouldnt have given real madrid a foul at the edge of the area....the ball was at the corner!

Oh yeah thank you Raul Bravo..guess we are even now...u banged nedved's head and passed the ball to zala for his goal :thumb: top defending:thumb:
