The Bianconeri repeated the performance produced against Real Madrid two years ago to beat the Galacticos 2-0 after extra time and qualify dramatically to the quarter finals.
Marcelo Zalayeta succeeded in doing something no one has ever done before: unite the Barcelona and Real Madrid fans. The Uruguay striker must really hate Spanish teams as up till tonight’s match, he was remembered in Spain as the player who eliminated Barcelona from the Champions League two years ago in extra time. Same fate for Real Madrid who will now be joining their rivals in the hate chorus directed towards Zalayeta as the Juve player scored the winner which eliminated Luxemburgo’s side from Europe’s top competition.
In a very tense match, the Bianconeri tried to take the game into their hands and missed many good chances early in the first half through Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Emerson and Camoranesi. Real tried to control the play and used the counter attack weapon quite effectively, even though Buffon did not have to make any saves throughout the whole half.
With the passing of the minutes, the Juventus’ attacks became less frequent and the Merengues started to successfully slow the rhythm of the match down and decrease the offensive strength of the home team.
Nothing seemed to change at the start of the second half and it was Real Madrid who went close to take the lead when Ronaldo’s only decent effort of the night was parried towards the post by Buffon. Capello then opted to send on the pitch Juve’s only real finisher: David Trezeguet. With the Frenchman, the Bianconeri immediately seemed more dangerous offensively and in the 75th minute the home crowd finally celebrated. Mauro German Camoranesi (best player on the field) crossed deep in the penalty area, where Ibrahimovic headed the ball back for Trezeguet who managed to score with an acrobatic half-volley.
A few minutes before, Zinedine Zidane was substituted by Guti, and the midfielder’s exit from the pitch was greeted with a respectful applause by the Bianconeri fans for Zizou’s past 5 year experience in Turin.
The match headed towards extra time where the match became livelier despite the fact that the players on the pitch were extremely tired. The tension on the pitch was extremely high and after much bickering and fighting, Tacchinardi and Ronaldo were both shown the red card for reciprocate fouls in the 113rd minute.
Just when the ghost of the penalty shoot-out was materializing, the Delle Alpi of Turin erupted like it had done 2 years before when on a similar night the Bianconeri defeated the Galacticos 3-1 to qualify for the final. Back then the hero was Pavel Nedved, this time it was Marcelo Zalayeta, Spain’s number one hate figure, who shot past Casillas from the edge of the penalty area after Real’s defence failed to clear the ball away from the danger zone, to seal the win and qualification three minutes from the final whistle.
Juventus fought bravely for the last minutes to hold on to a 2-0 win and qualify to the next round of the Champions League in what will be remembered as another memorable battle against the Spanish giants.
This is the first time that Real Madrid have been eliminated before the quarter final stage since the start of the Champions League, but it’s also the third consecutive time in the past ten years that Juve eliminated the Galacticos.
