It's actually rather sad. I mean, I'd punish all teams that qualify for EL and play their third team against any team, it's like their aim is to lose. We've seen such from Palermo when they lost against Thun, but there are tons of examples like that. IMO that's pretty horrible and Italian teams only got themselves to blame for that. Now this season even in CL they'll do worse than Germans, as I don't see Inter doing anything.
for "the economist" you have surprisingly much problem with doing the math

it is much more sensible for a small club to just take the income of international competition without playing the best players there knowing that they would not win the competition anyways.
if a small club plays all their good players in uefa league and in turn get fewer points in the domestic league the team will probably even finish out of the european qualification spots for next year and have a severe loss in income and less attractiveness for new players next season because of a low finish in the domestic league.

it's like saying "hey, i just have got this bonus money from my job, i have enough money to play a big poker tournament... i will just quit my job for a month play this poker tournament and risk not winning the tournament and get a worse rating on my job thus not getting the job bonus money the next year"... that is just not sensible in an economic way of thinking.

Erm... FYI other clubs from other countries play their best players and go through, unlike Italian teams.

Oh, and we were not a 'small' club when we got beaten.
