It is very simply because he can defend crosses and freekicks better, wich is how Athletico scores all its goals in top games.
how is that? he is not that good at headers and he is not a good jumper either... he may be better that Asamoah in this but it is pretty much useless as both arent good enough to defend set pieces

I follow Red's opinion on it yes.

After all, Evra has alot of experience with it from the EPL as a natural leftback, where as Asamoah barely did it as a wingback/central midfielder.

I recall him not beeing that effective at it when he played leftback a few time last season.
But he'd be playing in a position that he has done masterfully for the last two years, not at left back. And how many times has he been at fault for goals conceded?

Evra has more experience, but Asa is not some green youngster that it should matter so much, considering Evra is quite slow and lacks the stamina to run the wing all game long, and that he was a major defensive liability in his last season at United.

Another thing is that Atletico looks like they are not lining up in their traditional 4-4-2 countering formation. Smartly, they are opting for a lone striker and wingers it seems. I much prefer Asamoah under those circumstances.

Same. I have way more trust in Asamoah to be able to defend one on one against a winger than Evra. Our three centre backs should be enough to handle the aerial threat of Mandzukic.

Asamoah has been masterfull the past two years, but how many teams did he face that had a HUGE aerial thread in open play and especially freekicks and corners ?

Evra has done it most of his career. Experience counts. I think Asamoah is a better player then Evra, but in this case, i'd also play Evra to lower the main threat of Athletico

God, you form an opinion over such a small debate like two midgets Evra and Asamoah, who probably will neither even touch the ball in the box, and you just blow your points so far out of proportion. Like all of a sudden Evra puts on set-piece clearing master classes on his off days or can jump so high that he used to play on Man U's recreational basketball team.

Atletico aren't the only team with supposed huge areial threat, I'm sure Asamoah has some experience against that. I don't know what makes you think Evra is better than him at it, because him having a long career in England is not a convincing point. Go and look at some of the goals Utd conceded last season, and you would notice that Evra was ball watching or marking poorly on a few of them.

Speaking of uncertainty, we haven't seen Evra doing any defending with Juve yet, I wonder if he's gelled properly yet. We'll see tomorrow.

I just explained why Allegri is considering Evra.
If you guys think you are better then give him a phonecall to tell him how he is wrong.

And thats the end of this discussion for me, move on.

Zach you do realise that dealing with aerial crosses isn't something that wing backs in a 3-5-2 have to do too often right? Our three centre backs will pick up Mandzukic and Garcia who likes to get into the box. Griezmann and Turan will be looking hurt us in different ways and even if they do get into the box for crosses neither of them are prolific headers. Evra's a short little fuck anyways. I've seen him at fault for many a goal from crosses during his time at United.

if Evra plays then it will not be because he is (supposedly) superior to Asamoah in headers. but its still unsure who will start so you should wait before making such conclusions...
