Giorgio Chiellini believes the return of Antonio Conte to the Bianconeri dugout will give the team an “added edge” as they look to progress on both domestic and European fronts.
Speaking two days before the visit of Lazio, the 28-year-old said: “He’s the person who has changed the team over the past year and a half. I initially thought his absence would be less problematic. We work with him throughout the entire week and prepare for the games in the best possible way. But there are things that you can’t plan for and the manager is important in certain situations.”
The defender’s response to comments made by Inter frontman Antonio Cassano was emphatic: “The manager’s morality cannot be called into question. I think Antonio’s missed the boat as far as Juventus is concerned. I don’t know if it’s been his choice or not, but at his age there aren’t any more possibilities to play for Juventus. Their paths have never crossed and we’ll try and beat him on the pitch.”
Turning his thoughts back to the action, Chiellini is confident that Juventus are in good shape as they prepare to tackle two important home clashes against Lazio and Chelsea.
“We’re used to playing a high volume of games. Now we’ve got important ones on the horizon, but we must take each game as it comes. I don’t think we should allow ourselves to look too far ahead.
“The Chelsea game is an important one, but it’s not the final group game and therefore isn’t decisive. It will take four points to go through to the next round, but we could also take three in the final game.
“We’ll start by considering Lazio. We’ve had an excellent start to the championship campaign and have a four point lead over Inter. But we can only aim for another title victory by gaining consistent results.”
